Are they donating the canned goods to soup kitchens? I don't think many homeless carry around can openers. Maybe they should also have a can opener drive.

This reminds me that homeless people don't always stay in the shelter all day, and some don't go at all.

Snacks that can be carried in a pocket are good to give to those who need them -- crackers, fruit, cheese, cookies...cheese snack crackers are great!

On the last Sunday of every month, 12noon-2pm, Jersey City Peace Movement activists hand out literature and talk with passersby about the impact of war on our society and distribute food and clothing to those in need.

Feel free to stop by and bring whatever you can.
Find "Jersey City Peace Movement" on Facebook.

Homeless to eat, thanks to boy

Wednesday, December 03, 2008
By TOM SHORTELL
JERSEY JOURNAL

The Jersey City home of Tom Collins is now filled with more than 300 pounds of canned food. The seventh-grader isn't a pack rat, though. He's organizing a food drive to help homeless single men and women.

At the beginning of the month, Tom, his father John, and his father's fianc?e Janeen Fallon discussed ways they could help the community.

After hearing media reports that homeless shelters are struggling to provide food during the economic downturn, Tom decided he would run a food drive for St. Lucy's Shelter in Jersey City.

"It's sad seeing people on the street not being able to eat," he said. "Nobody helps them."

Tom has kept the project simple, asking friends, family and his father's and Fallon's co-workers for donations of canned food. Tom plans to turn over 310 pounds of canned food to the shelter today, his self-imposed deadline.

Anyone interested in donating food or clothing to the shelter can contact the shelter at (201) 656-7201, Ext. 201.
