Yes most cops get more breaks in a day then you get at work. you only see these guys when there not responding to beatings, break ins, car accidents, rapes, murders, attempted murders, sexual assaults, strange smells, strange packages, strange people, crack heads, meth heads, child molesters, domestic abuse, water main breaks, robberies, and so on and so on. i used to be a military police for 4 years and chicago pd for 3. i quit because it is high stress for 8 to 15 hours a day and thats if you can leave the job at the house when your shift is over. TRUE there are a LOT of A holes on any givin police force i know 1st hand i lived it. But just because you see a guy in a cigar shop or a nail salon or eating a hotdog doesn't mean that that the rest of there day isn't high paced in my expeirence if you get 5 mins to decompress you take it because the next call is going to come shortly. I would never say every cop is a hero but that doesn't mean they are lazy or they don't care. some do and some don't
BUT THE JOB SUCKS AND PAYS SHIT AND THE HOURS SUCK!

Anyone ever see the police officers stationed in Newport that used to walk in through the exit of the theater of the mall. They used to go in without saying anything to the employees and watch movies while on duty. I dont know if this still goes on but it wouldnt suprise me if it did.

You know why you see cops hanging out in certain stores. They get there food and drink for free. They make there own breaks for lunch make illegal u-turns, double park to go get lunch, run stop signs, run red lights just because they can etc. We all know this and see it everyday.

How about a Jersey City Police Sergeant in uniform, Police car parked outside, getting his eyebrows threaded at an Indian Hair Salon on Newark Avenue near Tonnele at 11 AM while another P.O. waited for him. The Police Car was marked Municipal Court. Life is good.

I have an idea why don't you walk up to him and tell him that your tax dollars pay his salary and he should stop dragging his lazy ass and get to work. Because i think we can all agree cops love to hear that.

You are totally unrealistic. How can you possibly enforce your wish-list. It's childish and antiquated. My reference was not inferring white-flight. I mean that the way of life has changed. Generations do not live together in the same apt. bldgs. as they once did in JC. You had several generations in 1 bldg. As far as cops living in Manhattan..... We all know that a single person making 100K just can barely afford a 1 bedroom. Could you raise a family on a cops salary, maybe 85K with OT? You need to be in a different economic strata my friend. Maybe Ray Kelly can afford it.......

Sorry, the overly defensive attitude of your responses along with the stats ("3 shifts, 24/7, about 1000 cops") reads like you are a cop or have one in your family at least. And it's not this thread only:

http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... 9&forum=10&post_id=132435

I think a residency requirement would go a long way towards increasing the quality of policing in this city. At least it would stop JC cops with responding with "why do you live here?" when taking a crime report (I think everyone in this town has one of these stories.)

Your arguments are weak. Yes, I would like teachers and firefighters to live here too. Yes, I think NYC should have similar requirements. "The world has changed, as did the demographics." -- not so sure about that one, sounds like a half-assed apology for white flight. And as for the taxes, people were complaining here about JC taxes which pay for JC police. If those police are paying their own taxes to other municipalities, then the 'cops pay taxes too' arguement in meaningless in this regard.

I think we've got some overly anti-cop people in this thread, and some overly pro-cop ones as well. I land somewhere in the middle, as I've seen both the good and bad while living here. And I'm honestly curious what percentage of cops live here, and would appreciate anyone who could answer the question with numbers instead of rhetorical questions.

If those folks don't live here they pay taxes where they live.

Mine either, but I have seen them in other apt. bldgs. and projects. So what are you saying they spent their whole shift there? If someone watched you at work would your productivity outpiut be 100%. C'mon.

Believe me, these guys didn't make it past the Cigar Shop. And no cop ever stopped by my apartment building.

To the couple of cops who are obviously on this thread, can you tell me what percentage of JC's police force actually live here and pay property taxes to the city? My impression is it's well below half.

A cop who is clearly on duty and clearly oversteps her/his bounds (i.e., rudeness to dogwalkers in Hamilton Park maybe) or routinelyshirking duty by hanging out and eating donuts or smoking cigars when they should be doing something else need to get checked, yes.

I'm not seeing substantial evidence of any of these infractions in this case. On the other hand, if you're getting a bad feeling about it, go ahead and report him/them.

This is why I love us. Just last week people we're bitching about cops being too aggressive in Hamilton Park and now we are talking about photographing them and turning them in.

So passive aggressive and lovely!

They are always there...
Anytime my husband is in there there are always a few policemen around (smoking cigars). I am pretty sure they are not there for safety...

I don't understand the connection between one cop who had an aggression problem and probably killed two people wrongly and a different cop smoking cigars at Sky Tobacco.

Definitely could be on break. And if you don't get one on your job, that sucks but it's not his problem. Want a break? Demand one.

Why does this particular sight irk you so? Who cares?

Although I didn't know him that well I did play Basketball with Maximo a couple of times in Hamilton Park. I remember when the shooting happened. The cop who shot him was actually transporting a prisoner. Maximo was tinting his car windows under the train trestle and the cop stopped to issue him a summons. It is illegal to do certain types of work on your car on the streets in JC but it was obvious at the time that this cop had a h*rd-on for Maximo. The confrontation escalated and the cop shot him. I am pretty sure that this cop was involved in another questionable shooting a couple years later and eventually kicked off the force.

Are you guys really serious? Maybe the guy is investigating something. Maybe the owner is his friend. He can be on a break. Shop owners like to have cops around.

Haven't you ever heard of the tobacco police?

Its this cops duty to make sure that the tobacco being sold has the right tar content as per the label. It is his job to sample some to make sure everything is correct.

Its bit like the liquor cops - they need to sample some to insure the alcohol content is correct, so nobody gets ripped-off.
