How could it be dangerous? A former tenant that didn't pay their rent on time wouldn't use that landlord as a reference for a new place they were trying to get into.

You don't give people you screwed over as references, so how could it be dangerous if you only give people you had good history with???

my bank balance and credit score were rather wobbly in my younger days, but I've always been a stellar tenant.

a survey of past landlords backs that up, much more so than a three-digit number.

Former landlords are under no obligation to report the actions of former tenants. It could be dangerous to do so.

If only such info wasn't so easy to scam. The work to verify that the name & number you've given me isn't your best friend who agreed to "play" you old landlord is too much. And your current landlord would have every reason to give you high marks especially if he wanted to get rid of you! Income, credit and "face to face" evaluation are good enough for us. My wife's, the social worker, BS detector is pretty finely tuned.

Just curious - roughly what would be considered a "decent" balance?

Agreed, I don't look just at credit score alone...My criteria is based on:
- a score of 670+
- decent salary (paystub required)
- (and if you don't have consistent income, commission only or waiter like salary) I require seeing a bank account with decent balance.

Hope that helps.

Brewster: +1

When I moved to JC, I was right out of school, my credit score was crap, because I had no real credit. (Store credit cards count towards score, but not for much.)

5 years later, my credit score is very good, and I've never been late on rent (and I'd consider us very good tenants), but I think a landlord looking at credit score alone would have really had to make a leap of faith on me.

Don't go just by score, look at whether they've been paying their bills. You can have a zero debt history and have a relatively low credit score because of it.

That said, under 650 would need some explanation. Under 600 would need a oscar quality performance to get by us.

Question for landlords:
What do you consider a good credit score for a perspective tenant?
