We've had ours stolen twice... last time was a little over a year ago. Now we chain and lock them up except when they are on the curb awaiting pickup. Annoying but true.

YES!!!! This has happened to me twice already! I even went and bought one at Home Depot with the recycling symbol on it, wrote my address on it, and it was still gone the next day. WTF?

Perhaps the garbage men made the executive decision that it was time for some new cans.

Has anyone else had the garbage men throw away their garbage cans? I put 5 cans out last night, and only two remained this morning.

I looked up and down the block, but they were nowhere to be found. I can't imagine they were stolen as they were old with broken handles and holes.

Robin.

When we first moved here, we set up a recycling program in our building. A few weeks into it, our recycling bins, which were outside for collection, disappeared. I just thought the garbage guys threw them out. A few days later, I was walking by our neighbors house and saw both bins under her porch. When I asked her about it, she said she thought no one wanted them and took them before we had a chance to put them back in our building. Needless to say, we never put the bins out again. Our paper is now either bundled or put into cardboard boxes and our plastics-metals-etc are collected in a clear trash bag which is taken out of the bin and placed outside. Only in JC.....

If you put your building number on your trashcan it is less likely to be stolen.

Not doubting the trashcan theft... it's one of the pleasures of JC Living.

But also, if they are gone the morning after the trash gets picked up, walk your block. I've seen the trash guys pick up a can, empty it into the truck and it ends up 4 houses down on the opposite side of the street.

I thought i was the only one....ALL of my trash cans disappeared a few months ago. I couldn't believe that someone would go thru so much but then I realized that with the economy the way it is people are becoming Petty thieves. Not only that they came back and unrolled my garden hose and took that too!!

My garbage cans and hose a total of 150 dollars, not exactly 5 dollars.

Now i bought the really cheap garbage cans. and my hose is in the garage.

For the last three months or so, every week or two weeks my recycling bin disappears. I'm not sure if they're being thrown into the truck with the recycling, or stolen. Its hard to imagine that anyone would want them, they're cheap, and have my address on them. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any suggestions?

TRASHCAN SALE!!!

I am having a huge stoop sale this coming weekend because my inventory of "used" garbage cans is getting backed up! There will be a variety of styles and colors in both metal and plastic! Some come pre-labled with an address of your choice*!!! My "importers" have scoured the world/neighborhoods to find only the best cans so come on down!!!!

*We take no responsibility for pre-labled cans. The management cannot take trade-ins. No returns or exchanges. Not responsible for critters (possums, racoons, transients etc.) which may inhabit cans. Financing available.

When you buy new cans, make sure they have some sort of plastic handle. Buy a bike lock and attach it to whatever is nailed down...a railing by the stairs, a gate, whatever. We had ours stolen last summer and resorted to this. It's a pain, but we still have our trash cans.

the trash can. we have a clip of the guy throwing the whole can into the truck, him turning on the compactor, and then the truck driving away. i believe it was reported but nothing was done about it.

It's annoying.

Trashcan bandits on the prowl?!? Just a few minutes ago my trashcan went down behind the gate in front of my building. Heard it from inside but by the time I got out, no one was around. It's never done that before... can't imagine it was due to the light wind but it was very near the gate. It's a huge 60+gal one on wheels. Someone may have been trying to left it over or it may have been a coincidence??? It's got my address all over it so if anyone did manage swipe it, it would have been easy to spot. This happened on 6th St.

when i was still in grammar school someone decided to steal one of our trash cans...mind you we have those big blue hard plastic oil drums that my dad turned into trash barrels, so the handles were hand cut into the barrels and our address was spraypainted on them. about five years later, i found our trash can, still with our address painted on it, three blocks away in someones front yard. of course i took it back. i think it was just a prank of some sort, but a kind of annoying prank....it's really no fun putting the bags out on the ground and having cats and raccoons rip them apart all over the sidewalk while waiting for the garbage trucks to show up. back then the trucks would show up anytime between 6am and 9am, so you would almost always have some sort of garbage trail on the sidewalk if you had no can.

a few months ago we caught the garbage men on our surveillance camera throwing our can into the garbage truck, only to never be seen again. that could have happened to you too...

best of luck to you...

easy solution:

1.) buy one 12-gauge pump shotgun and a 14-inch Mag-Lite.

2.) tie 6-10 Campbell's soup cans to garbage receptacles with fishing line.

3.) wait for dark.

4.) when cans start a-jangling, open window, focus beam of Mag-Lite and pump chamber for maximum effect.

5.) watch teens scramble.

6.) repeat.

works every time!

My advice: Buy new cans. If they're also stolen from you, buy some more.

On a side note, somebody rode their bike through my backyard. Damn kids!

why not 'tag' your cans with your house number or get your kids the paint them with a mural - what about an enterprising artist out there offering this sort of service.

Hi Stani,

Good Advice...

Here's the crazy part...we don't EVER put our trash cans on the street.

Mostly because the garbage removal personnel tend to toss the containters once they dump the contents into the truck. Also, in wind/rain storms, the receptacles blow all over the street.

What's frustrating is that the individuals who took them, opened the door and came INTO our iron gate! They had to walk at least 6-10 feet and then walk out with them. (I can't imagine that they could lift them over. They are large, heavy containers, plus they were filled with trash bags for Thursday night pick up.)

It's a shame, but this time around we will buy only one large receptacle with an attached lid. We will have to secure it to our gate with a chain and lock.

I also asked the businesses close by, who are open all day, and unfortunately, no one saw anything. This probably happened late Wednesday night or early in the AM Thursday.

We don't put trash cans out on the street, but instead, put out just garbage bags for collection. Between collections, the garbage bags go in the basement. I assume there's a reason you can't do the same thing. $84 is a lot to lose.

span-

sorry about your cans. if you can get to national wholesale liquidators they have the 45 gallon cans with wheels for about half the price of lowes or home depot.

We're out $84. We had 2 of these.

Ridiculous.

GPS.

Seriously.

If the cops were smart they'd put gps in them and find out where they're dissapearing to.

Why would people need a container that holds 50 gallons?

They're obviously not going to be used to hold trash, when your name's on there.

Hello,

As we went to place our two large trash cans out on the curb last night, Thursday, 12/06/07....our trash cans were no where to be found. Stolen...with trash in them!

We have an iron gate around our property line. To take them took serious effort.

What is wrong with people? Now we have to chain our trash cans to the gate...how pathetic!

We called the police to file a report. The operator thought we were joking.

Very, very, frustrating...
