Louis' Italian American Restaurant. It's in the Bronx. Try the veal, it's the best in the city.

Volare on W4th Street. It's a small place that's under the radar but still get crowded on the weekends with regulars so I recommend making reservations. They will make anything you request, even if it is not on the menu as long as they have the ingredients, which in my experience they always do! Very reasonable too.

I'll have to strongly disagree with your comment, but I'm not going to argue about something as subjective as personal preference. There is however a reason why San Domenico was Luciano Pavarotti's favorite Italian restaurant in the world (not jut the United States), and there is a reason why the Italian Consulate in NY holds almost all of it's dinner meetings in their private room.

That being said, they're closing down in a month and a half (after 20 years) and reopening a new restaurant in a location further downtown that is twice the size. It will be a more casual modern concept since that's where the market is heading.

Theres a reason why employees of the Italian consulate dine at SD, thats because the Italian Gov't foots the bill.

I don't disagree that SD is excellent, but once more way over rated for your $$$$$.

Regarding the Late great Maestro, I had the pleasure of taking an elevator ride back in the early 90's with Mr Pavarotti and have to say that He was indeed one of the most down to earth and Nicest people I have ever met.

I love Lupa. It has moderate prices and you can get in. Otto is a lot of fun and relatively cheap. Babbo is amazing but a pain in ass to get in to and expensive.

I have only been there once about a year ago but I thought Inoteca on Rivington and Ludlow was really good. They have a huge wine list and serve everything with small plates. The downside is it's small and they don't take reservation for less than, I think 8 people.

If you're talking top-shelf, high priced, wear a jacket to dinner Italian, Felidia is still the best. Took my wife there for her birthday last year and it was, as always, amazing.

Not to be missed, though, is Apizz! (pronounced Ah-beets), on Eldridge and Stanton on the Lower East Side. Get the meatballs, they are unbelievable. Not pasta and meatballs - just meatballs. Two enormous meatballs made from veal, pork and beef with a little bit of ricotta cheese in the center of each, smothered in red sauce. Oh my god, they are good. Apizz! is much more casual than Felidia, but still a very nice place and not cheap by any means. Still, cheaper, and as I said, more casual than Felidia. It's great. Been there 8 or 9 times. Want to go there now. Yum.

We were recently introduced to Volare on West 4th Street just east of 6th Ave. It's a little hole in the wall joint that has some of the best Italian food I've ever had.

They have many things on the menu, but if you don't find anything you like, they'll make what you request.

I wish I would have known about this place for the last 17 years or so I've lived in the NYC area.

I simply love Beppe on 22nd btwn Broadway & Park Ave South. It's the closest I've gotten to good Italian beside eating in Italy. It is expensive so I don't get there as often as I'd like, but great food. Oh, and if it really matters, there's usually a celebrity or two there. Ate next to Susan Sarandon/Tim Robbins & saw Dylan McDermott near the entrance when we went for dinner the last time.

Had dinner at Da Andrea last week with friends and we all were very pleased with our entrees. I had the cod special. It was extremely tasty! The bill came to about $125- 1 appetizer, 4 entrees, 1 bottle of wine and 3 desserts. Not bad. I would def. go there again. It's a small restaurant, so I would make reservations.

For the best, try Il Mulino on West Third Street. It usually requires a three week prior reservation for dinner or try lunch for less of a timeframe. It is Northern Italian at its best. Don?t eat the day you go, the portions are huge; not cheap but a meal you won?t forget.

Carmine's is a place to go to if you want to feed a large group on the cheap, large portions of mediocre food. Not recommended for a special occasion, it's also an old school spaghetti house.

yeah I reread the OP - Otto would be the best bet if you're looking for a bit of a trendy place that's not *really* expensive like Babbo or Peasant.

I concur.

Hi all - can anyone throw out ideas of their favorite Italian restaurants in NYC? A friend who loves pasta wants to have a birthday dinner in the city tomorrow night and I just wanted to get people's thoughts. It does not necessarily have to be something old school, but something that looks nice and trendy inside with good food! Thanks in advance for your help!

By the looks of your inquiry, your not looking to go over the top.

Best bet for some really good pasta, pizza and Salumi, yr best served going to OTTO (Mario battali) located at 8th st and fifth ave.

Huge selection of wine
excellent food
Nice/Trendy atmosphere

Only negative opinion, a bit too loud, but hey after a few glasses of Vino, you'll find your voice increasing a few decibals as well.

Enjoy

Da Andrea is good, but another cozy low-profile place is one block north, right on the corner of Hudson and Bank (I forget the name) - both are good, but the one I'm thinking of has much better atmosphere.

And then another few blocks north on Hudson is Angelo Piccolo - very good, hard to get in without a res... (I used to live in that neighborhood)

If you want to get into Babbo kind of money, though, there's also Peasant on Elizabeth St. (I think) - there's a huge wood-burning stove in the back of the room they use for everything, it's very nice.

Da Andrea on Hudson between Perry & W 11th is an absolutely terrific Northern Italian restaurant...owned and operated by Italians with an Italian chef and servers.

If you want something that's not red-sauce Italian, I'd recommend Giorgione on Spring Street, west of Hudson. Really nice and great for celeb spotting. A little off the beaten path though.

It's owned by the Deluca of Dean & Deluca and it's delicious.

+1. Speaking of Batali? Good wine lists in all the restaurants.

I like Lupa quite a bit too. It?s sort of the mid-tier restaurant between Otto and Babbo in the West Village close to the Soho border. I think Lupa has a long table that they use for walk-ins, so it might be possible to show up and eat. Also, Lupa does do seating at the bar, so if it?s a small party and you don?t mind the bar vibe, you have that as an option too.

Anyone else read and enjoy Heat? It?s the non-fiction book about a writer from the New Yorker who becomes a ?Kitchen-slave? at Babbo and later apprentices with a Tuscan butcher. Great read, and Mario and all the restaurants (Babbo, Lupa and Otto) play a big part in the book.

D'oh! I overlooked the short notice comment in the earlier post.

Yeah, forget about Babbo, unless you are very good at sweet talking the host. ;) Good luck!
