Just to highlight how vigilant the cops have become - at 11pm last night everyone was kicked out of Van Vorst park. People walking dogs, people canoodling on park benches, some guy on his cell phone. There wasnt disturbing of the peace. No-one was being threatening. Nice urban night. Then the cops pulled up, drove into the park up to the gazebo and drove everyone out of the park and into the streets.

Not sure what purpose it served. People were back inthe park 5 mins after the cop left and people walk THRU the park all hours. kinda a waste of effort if you ask me -- meanwhile kids on bikes roaming the streets throwing firecrackers at each other goes unnoticed by the JCPD. Nice.

Fwd: Van Vorst Park Rally for Safety : July 12 @ 7:30PM Dear Mariah, Cat and Henrietta, Thanks for the great assessment below and the update for your next VVP Rally for Safety on July 12th at 7:30PM.! Since our next DJCW meeting is Monday, July 9th, we will encourage all our members to come out to support you and hopefully some there at last night's rally will be at our meeting. Thanks again Mariah to you, Henrietta and Cat for all your hard work bringing this public meeting together. By working together we will all benefit, provide more safety and hopefully engage the community with our youth who need mentors, support and opportunities for both play and work. Special thanks to our volunteer member, Jim from Downtown Jersey City Watch for printing and distributing our notice flyers for last night's meeting! Dale Downtown Jersey City Watch downtownjcwatch@gmail.com ----Original Message----- From: Mariah [redacted] Subject: [redacted] We're planning a follow-up rally roughly two weeks from now that will focus on the progress that has been made in the intervening time from last night's rally as well as review the information that was disseminated last night. This will give those already engaged in this renewed push for safety an opportunity to assess what improvements have been made as well as provide a chance for those who couldn't attend last night's rally a chance to learn and benefit from the expertise provided by the police and various community organizations. We have just confirmed that Captain McDonough will attend as well as a representative from the Downtown Jersey City Watch, the Van Vorst Park Association, and the Guardian Angels. This rally will be on July 12 in Van Vorst Park at 7:30. Last night's gathering in the park was organized to get people talking about the recent violent crimes in our neighborhood and to EDUCATE ALL OUR NEIGHBORS ABOUT HOW THEY, AS INDIVIDUALS, CAN TAKE ACTION TO MAKE THEMSELVES AND THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD A SAFER PLACE. Safety is a two-way street. We cannot expect things to happen unless we get involved and make them happen. The residents of Van Vorst Park want to publicly thank Steve Fulop and the East District Police Dept. for their quick response to our urgent requests. Within days of bringing our concerns to the public these requests were met. We asked for three things from the city council: #1 Increased uniformed police presence in our neighborhood. We wanted beat cops! #2 Street lights to be repaired. #3 Trees to be trimmed so light could reach the sidewalk. Within days, the lights on our block were fixed, the trees were trimmed and we have greater police presence in our park and in our neighborhood. THANK YOU!!! This is a wonderful start; but this momentum must be kept going, and it can only be kept going when each citizen takes it upon him or herself to commit to improving safety. The Downtown Jersey City Neighborhood Watch is a wonderful and easy way for individuals to communicate directly to the police. We hope that some of last night's attendees will be at the next meeting on July 9. We encourage those who attend to communicate to their neighbors who could not attend any updates from that meeting. We'd also like to hear each attendee at the July 12th rally who attended last night's rally tell us at least one safety strategy that they've adopted and employed in the past two weeks. SAFETY BEGINS AND ENDS WITH THE INDIVIDUAL. When a collection of individuals commits to making safety improvements, the whole community benefits and the police can better do their jobs to protect us. There is another equally important factor in the safety equation. A number of these violent crimes were committed by juveniles. The woman who organized the Safety Rally works with teens in the area and last night put forth this question to the crowd: "What opportunities are being offered to the kids of Jersey City and how can we use our powers to provide for meaningful experiences for these children?" The absolute best prevention of crime committed by youths is to get these juveniles engaged in the community in a way that is positive. At last night's rally, a longtime resident of Jersey City brought up the amazing transformation of Van Vorst Park - from red dirt to beautiful gardens - years ago carried out principally by Jersey City youths. Connection to community, meaningful activities, pride in accomplishments - these are the true preventative measures to stem juvenile crime. There is much work to be done. We feel this most recent safety push is off to a promising start. We feel so gratified by the community and government response. This is just the start. We must keep this ball rolling through indivdual and community efforts. We encourage all members of the Jersey City community to come to Van Vorst Park on July 12 at 7:30 to keep this ball rolling and take up the responsibility for making our neighborhoods safer. Thanks for your time, Cat and Mariah On 6/29/07 9:00 AM, "Dale wrote: [redacted] Here's an update from last night's "Van Vorst Park Rally for Safety": There is going to be a follow-up rally whereby Captain Short stated that Captain Comey would meet with this group and this ad hoc group's first stated goal was a petition for more police presence of uniform officers in Van Vorst Park. Last night, approximately 100 people gathered in the rain under the gazebo as Steven Fulop addressed the group following Wednesday night's City Council meeting where outraged citizens gathered in resonse to five muggings and robberies over the past few weeks. They gathered tonight to listen to members of the police dept including Captain Short and Detective Connors, the Guardian Angels, Van Vorst Park Watch, and Downtown Jersey City Watch speak to the assembled group. Captain Short introduced one of the officers who has been assigned to VVP, spoke of various safety tips, and encouraged those gathered to contact their elected representatives and Police Chief Jefferson as to their petition for more uniformed police presence. The Downtown Jersey City Watch asked all present to join the group's broadcast email list for safety alerts and to attend the next meeting on July 9th at Grace Church Van Vorst, 7PM, entrance through the 2nd street red doors just west of 39 Erie Street. A sizeable group in attendance tonight. Curious to hear peoples' thoughts on Councilman Fulop's reassurances. Feeling confident about downtown's future safety?

Hello neighbors, In case you haven't heard, there was a robbery Monday night at 8:00 on Varick between York and Bright. A woman (I don't know her, sorry) who lives on the corner of York and Bright was attacked at 8:00PM!! She was pushed to the ground by two young men, robbed, and ended up in the hospital with stitches. I think she had some damage to her teeth. That's all I know. I just called the police dept. and found out that there were witnesses and that they have the names of the people who did it, that is all the info they had at present. We are all savvy city slickers and get the fact that living in an urban area can be dangerous, but I just want to put out a reminder as well as some friendly suggestions about what you can do to make yourself and your neighborhood a little safer 1. Keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings, especially when you are alone (ipod users especially) 2. Call the cops if you see something or someone suspicious. Don't feel dumb, your call could help. (non-emergency # below) 3. Voice your concern about crime in your neighborhood to the police.(community relations # below) 4. Pass this email around Be not afraid, but be smart and take action. Don't just protect yourself, protect your neighbors. Worth posting similar patterns/experiences if u have them.

I doubt this is really relavent, maybe if your burglar was James Bond yes, but not Timmy the crackhead.

Firstly, how would someone know where the wireless signal was originating in an area as squashed together as Downtown JC? and then be able to break your encryption, unless of course you don't have your encryption turned on which is kinda stupid in a built up area.

If you are not encrypted, don't go posting your credit card details on that wireless LAN anytime soon. FYI

How would someone know? Drive by any house using any wifi detector you can pick up from staples for $30 or so. Encryption? They don't need to care about encryption, just the signal strength and whether anyone is home. And with a lil more sophistication they can probably tell that too even if your signal is encrypted. They just need to tell whether packets are moving.

Timmy the crackhead? These guys go after your top-end electronics and are pretty discerning about what they take and what they leave.

If you choose to believe that the folks committing these crimes are simple opportunistic idiots, then you're not likely to find them. These guys know what they're looking for, and if they have that much intelligence, at least credit them with having done their homework.

Heck, the car thieves know where to punch a hole in your car door with a screwdriver to make the car think it's involved in a crash and "fail-open" - unlocking your trunk, doors and rolling down your windows. James effing Bond :)
What makes you think house burglars are less smart?

Sure, maybe doing it right by the school was a bit on the dumb side, but don't we have bigger issues to deal with?

Afterall, it was just "chalk"?

I doubt this is really relavent, maybe if your burglar was James Bond yes, but not Timmy the crackhead.

Firstly, how would someone know where the wireless signal was originating in an area as squashed together as Downtown JC? and then be able to break your encryption, unless of course you don't have your encryption turned on which is kinda stupid in a built up area.

If you are not encrypted, don't go posting your credit card details on that wireless LAN anytime soon. FYI

Being a victim of burglary myself, I have a couple of personal theories on this:

1. I had a recent visit from a local cable service engineer.
2. I had a wireless lan that people outside the residence could use to detect activity. (Your wireless lan not only tells people that you're likely to have tech goodies, but can also indicate whether ur at home on not to a tech-savvy burglar).

Worth posting similar patterns/experiences if u have them.

Hello everyone.

For the months of March, April, and May - the crime reports were as low as zero for auto theft, break/theft into auto, robbery, and burglary in the Van Vorst Park area and Harsimus Cove Area. This has been an all time low for those areas. This email box did not receive any reports except for that I was begininning to think that we should cancel our next meeting. Within the past 2 weeks, I've been receiving several emails from victims or neighbors of victims of 2 robberies, 1 auto theft, 1 bar problem, graffitti, disorderly groups, drinking with open containers, and getting our caller ID numbers from the police.

We will meet with the police on June 9th at 7pm at the Grace Van Vorst Church to discuss the recent activity.

For those members who are on the list, please make sure that victims have filed a police report AND follow up with this emailbox with file number, date and location of crime. Also remind all witnesses to contact us if they have not been contacted by the police about their witness report. Victimization reports that are compiled by us help us compare with the reports of the police.

Below are some recent incidents that have been brought to our attention:

1) 5/30 - Attack on 2nd and Coles Street - If anyone has information, please reply to this email.**NOTE** Please send to Downtown JC Watch list below:

2) 6/1 - A member's neighbor parked his GF's car (Honda CRX)on 3rd just in from Erie across from side of C-Town and in front of new condo bldg on that Northeast corner. Sometime between Thurs mid-day and Friday morning the car was stolen. This was 3rd time car stolen, they have both club and "kill switch" and even so it's gone. They reported it to police and filed report.

3)Two (2) Burglaries on Brunswick Streets

4) Burglary to Auto on Brunswick Streets

Thanks!
Pam

Simple advice. It's JC, don't
leave anything in you car. Period. Even if your car is
cluttered with stuff you don't think is important,
people will assume you have things of value stashed in
it, or you forgot to take out.

Car alarms are annoying, but they help, even if you
just have a simple blinking light on your dash. It
will deter people from breaking in.

Also, I know it looks, like a "Young kid" thing to do,
but tinted windows, aren't a bad idea. Then people
can't see inside your car. People won't risk breaking
into a car, if they can't see anything worth stealing.
Rain guards help too. On most late model cars, or cars
with frameless windows, theives just use a
screwdriver to pry the window open slightly and stick
a metal hangar in to unlock the door. If you have
plastic guards on the windows, this becomes a much
harder task.
