Maybe the two bars on this street should be forced to hire armed police. Maybe there should be a "bar area" that way the City could beef up security.

Driver strikes two with his SUV after episode at Jersey City bar

Monday, February 25, 2008
BY CHARLES HACK
JERSEY JOURNAL

A driver, enraged after discovering that a Jersey City bar was closed, used his sport utility vehicle yesterday to run down two men, hitting one of them repeatedly, according to city police.

Police saw a large group of people gathered in the street at Brunswick and Second streets around 3:35 a.m. and heard people screaming, authorities said.

Officers then saw a semi-conscious 26-year-old Lincoln Street resident who apparently had been hit by a vehicle. He was lying between two parked cars, gasping for air and bleeding from the head and face, police said. A 27-year-old Prospect Street resident then approached officers and said he'd been hit by the same vehicle, a white GMC Yukon.

The Prospect Street resident said the car's driver had been fighting with the two men and a bouncer outside a bar on Second Street, between Monmouth and Brunswick streets, that had closed for the night. The driver then got into the Yukon, double parked on Second Street, and sped toward the three men as they walked down the street, police said.

The bouncer was able to leap out of the way, but the Prospect Street man and the Lincoln Street man were hit.

The Prospect Street man said he was pushed against a parked car, while the Lincoln Street man was knocked down in the street. The driver of the Yukon then backed up and ran over the victim several times before the bouncer and Prospect Street man were able to pull him to safety between two parked cars.

Witnesses told police the man had been hit at least four times.

In addition, three parked cars were damaged -- a 1998 GMC Jimmy, a 2006 Toyota Corolla and a 1996 Dodge Caravan, police said.

The Lincoln Street man was treated for life-threatening head injuries at Jersey City Medical Center; authorities said he was in critical but stable condition yesterday.

The second man also went to the hospital, but his injuries were not considered serious.

The assailant was described as a short, chubby man in his late 20s with a tattoo on his left forearm.
