I've never had standing room only when boarding a train at 3am on MTA. However, there have been times I've been at 14th street at 3am and I can't even board a train because it's packed worse than a WTC-bound train departing Grove St. during rush hour.

It's true, PATH is one of the few subway systems in the world that operate 24/7, but that's because the demand is there. Show me another system that transports as many people, given the microscopic size of the system, relatively speaking.

PATH is vital to the economic health of the region and is used heavily during the overnight hours. I'm willing to venture that most systems in the world do not have the same passenger demand overnight as PATH.

I agree that the service frequency should be increased, but even NYC subway switches to every ~20 mins between trains ~12am-5am weekdays and the same schedule on almost every line on weekends. Some lines are better than others with standard 4-6 minute intervals all the way up until 1am on weekends.

Copenhagen is a little better with 20 mins between trains 12am-6am weekdays and 7-15 minutes between trains during the same periods on weekends.

You do realize that PATH is one of about 10 subway lines worldwide that operate 24/7, right?

Not sure how this matters... so, yes, they theoretically operate
24/7, but the 35 minute time span between trains in the late evening is crazy. I have seen late evening trains packed as bad as morning rush hour trains.

In fact, only the NYC subway, PATH and Copenhagen Metro operate their entire networks 24/7.

Cool little trivia night factoid.

This is a troll post. It's like 15 minutes to Harrison. 15 minutes back to Journal Square, and it's not an easy transfer -- you might even have to exit the system to get back in.

There was a news story on some local news website talking about start of the next phase to upgrading Penn Station NYC. Minimal number of commuter trains to NYC, recommending getting off @ Newark and taking PATH. Another option was NJ Transit Bus Service into City from special staging areas.

i hope you arent banking on any investment is public transit (especially in NYC) in the next 4 years since this administration is the most anti-public one thats been in office in a very long time.

I can't believe there have been no comments on here today... PATH was shut down for a couple of hours this morning because of a broken track, leading to a refugee-like shuffle down Columbus to the ferry. I was fortunate enough to be one of the earlier arrivals at the ferry - by the time I got on the boat, the line for tickets extended to the Hyatt. NJ Transit had a train stuck in the tunnel this morning. JFK flooded over the weekend. LIRR had broken tracks last week. The bridge over the Newark Bay shut down the week before because it had "dropped several inches"...

Calling our infrastructure third world is an insult to a good portion of the third world...

Laugh?, it?s no secret at this point. When Grove is crazy in the morning, I?ll catch a train to JSQ to get the 33rd train. All my friends do the same. And friends at Newport do a similar shuffle to Hoboken for the 33rd train. The over-crowding is so bad I?m considered making that route my routine. I?m over trains arriving so full at Grove that I can?t get on. PATH is an over-crowded mess, getting worse by the day.

It is an awkward maneuver for the able-bodied. I cannot imagine how an elderly person with a walker or a wheelchair-bound passenger could comfortably accomplish this.

I used the elevator because I had my hands full of heavy luggage. Oh hey, there's a button I need to press and hold my full body weight into. Handy.

In typical Port Authority manner, they've taken something simple, and made it complicated.

And how is this even ADA-compliant?

Unbelievable. It's like they've gone it that way to design it that poorly out of spite. I would relish is this was also found to be non ADA compliant and they're forced to rework it again.

Thanks. I guess I confused the date with the renovation of the MTA stairwell at the same station (32nd & Broadway), which was closed from Aug or Sept until 12/28/17 for renovation, and is now reopened.

I wonder why the PATH stairs renovation is taking so much longer. Did Calatrava design it?

Anyone know the full story about the stairs at the south end of the 33rd Street station?

I thought the sign said they'd be closed through the end of 2017. Today I hoped to use them, but the sign now says they're closed "through early 2018." That sign may have been changed months ago, for all I know.

I'm just wondering what could they possibly be doing that the stairs are closed for 4 months (and counting)?

Google searching and PATH website searching hasn't yielded any information.

Who would that be? It's on the sidewalk between the covering of the staircase and the building. Is there someone on the other end of the see-click and fix that has a rapid response pooper scoop?

(I didn't originally put this in the PATH thread - it got moved here.)

Might want to avoid the PATH entrance on the SE corner of Grove and Columbus. Somebody took a dump alongside the stairs. From the looks of it, a large, well-fed someone.

Man seriously hurt in fall at World Trade Center Oculus

POSTED 12:49 PM, AUGUST 1, 2017, BY SAMANTHA TATA, UPDATED AT 01:11PM, AUGUST 1, 2017

MANHATTAN ? A man was seriously hurt Tuesday when he fell inside the Oculus at the World Trade Center, FDNY said.

The victim plummeted about 25 to 30 feet inside the transit hub and shopping center, fire officials said. He suffered serious traumatic injury.

FDNY said they received an emergency call shortly after 12 p.m. EMS transported a patient from 185 Greenwich St., the address of Westfield World Trade Center, to the hospital in serious condition.

Additional details were not immediately available.

A witness shared video from inside the Oculus, showing a wide police perimeter set up inside the transit hub around what appears to be a messenger bag.

In February, a woman died after plunging 30 feet off the side of an escalator at the Oculus.

IIRC there weren't many suits when he won the competition. It was quite some time ago, after all.

It's not really clear that the leaks are Calatrava's fault. It's not like these buildings are designed to leak, and architects have limited control over the GC and subcontractors.

Plus, when something goes wrong in a building, everyone gets sued, even "starchitects." It's mostly a game to wring money out of the insurers.

What Calatrava is on the hook for are some of the inflated costs, as his designs are rather expensive to construct. Even in that respect, there were a lot of factors that drove the cost of the Oculus through the roof, such as demanding more steel in the structure, or Bloomberg demanding an accelerated schedule.

Leaky Ceiling Still A Problem At WTC Oculus

July 20, 2017 5:44 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? There were sunshine and dry skies Thursday, but, still, water was leaking from the ceiling at the World Trade Center Oculus transportation hub.

It also happened in May, but the Port Authority said the problem had been fixed.

As CBS2?s Tony Aiello reported, a worker mopped up water while buckets collected the stuff dripping from the ceiling.

?It leaks when it rains,? said Oculus visitor Janet Parson. ?No, it?s not raining (Thursday), but it?s worse when it rains. But there?s always a leak, almost always a leak.?

It?s a blemish on what some consider one of the great public spaces in the world.

The leaky ceiling is just down the stairs from the great hall of the Oculus, the soaring space was designed by star architect Santiago Calatrava, which came in seven years late and $2 billion over budget.

One informed estimate has Calatrava collecting more than $50 million for his design work at the site, one of the greatest paydays in the history of architecture.

Critics say his ambitious designs often lead to problems. The facade at a Spanish opera house had to be stripped because tiles kept falling off, while the owner of a winery sued Calatrava over the leaky roof.

?His designs are pretty cool, but he had a lot of problems with overcost, especially like it always costed more than what?s expected,? said Albero Armenbariz, a tourist from Calatrava?s native Spain.

The Oculus was an enormous and complicated project. But the Port Authority says the leaks aren?t a consequence of the design, blaming ?outside third party construction work,? apparently at 3 World Trade Center next door.

The Port Authority says engineers are working on a fix.

Until then, buckets are an unintended addition to the spectacular space.

Found it, thanks! I never would have found it without those instructions, and still, it wasn't so easy.
