I was driving in Bayonne and saw something odd in the distance at the lower end around 5th street. Since that is the area where they filmed Tom Cruise in the remake of War of the Worlds I thought maybe it could be another movie shoot. The thing did look like one of the War of the World machines.

Upon further investigation I realized it was a massive freaking wind mill. I couldn?t believe my eyes. Whenever I browse the new Bay Front JC development website ( www.bayfrontjerseycity.com ) I always laugh and shake my head at the drawing showing people frolicking about with a wind mill farm in Newark Bay in the background. Yeah right wind mills in JC. Well I guess it is a possible because Bayonne went and did it.

Here?s the JJ piece with a picture?

Bayonne's new turbine that will power MUA pumping stations has its official bow as some neighbors air noise and safety concerns

By Kate Kowsh/The Jersey Journal

The Peninsula City?s newly erected wind turbine was officially unveiled yesterday.

Located at the Bayonne Municipal Utility Authority?s Oak Street Pumping station, the turbine will produce 3.3 gigawatt hours of electricity a year, enough to power 600 single-family homes for the year, officials said.

Comprised of a roughly 260-foot tower and a 1.5 megawatt center piece, the turbine will be used to assist in powering the both the city?s Oak Street and Fifth Street pumping stations.

It will go online in March, officials said.

Several city officials, including BMUA executive director Steve Gallo, director of Public Safety Jason O?Donnell, director of Municipal Services Joseph Waks, and City Council President Terry Ruane were on hand for yesterday?s official unveiling.

Bayonne has some good things going on?.all of that new retail at the Bayonne Crossing shopping center and now a wind mill. I also just saw the below piece about them renting out an old landmark bank building for special events. I don?t know if you need to be a Bayonne resident to rent it, but it is cool space either way.
