i ate at Taqueria when it first opened and found the owner rude and pretentious. hadn't been there since and tried it again this week. walked out on the rude and pretentious owner. WTF?

skip this place. the latin soul food joint that was there before Taqueria was 100 percent better. any place that has to beat you over the head with how authentic they are needs to check themselves.

i think the nickname "moby" is totally inaccurate, by the way. bald-by-choice with glasses... that's the extent of the overlap. it's so inaccurate it's distracting!

moby:

nationality - american

resides - new york/ london/ copenhagen/ japan... some of these? not flipping burgers in dumpy a** jersey city

height - 5'6" ??

weight - 135 ??

skills and interests - music, politics, charity, human rights,
animal rights, etc.

discipline - musicality

politics - left libertarian? (anarcho-vegan?)

Yeah... except that even "33" lost to the Lakers more times than he beat them...

only because the lakers failed to make it to the finals in 86. That Celtics team is still the greatest basketball team in our life time.

Recently I saw a sign in Taqueria that they were opening a new location in the East Village.

Is this the beginning of the end in terms of quality? Will the East Village location get all the attention from the owners?

There goes one of our little gems that Manhattan doesn't have!

This is good news for Jersey City, since this move likely means that the male partner in the business will spend more time in NYC. He's the only person in Taqueria with a bad attitude!

Also, good luck making Taqueria work in the East Village. You'll have to compete with the well-established San Loco, home of the famous Taco Loco.

I hear you on them not being the nicest counter guys, but they have gotten better. I had that same "they're dicks, I'm never going there again" attitude until I went there again. Their pork and fish tacos are so good, its so worth it. Plus they've been so much nicer. I haven't seen the guy with the "dick" attitude in a while.

In a town that doesnt have the best mexican, its hard to hold a grudge on Taqueria!

it's got nothing to do with being cheap, you just don't need guacamole on everything. If you're that concerned about it just get tacos to go and eat your guac at home.

They sell guac, but you have to mash it yourself. Just ask for a side avocado and a side of their home made hot sauce and stick a fork in it.

In my opinion they've gotten much nicer and happier over the years. The Mexican staff is especially nice. I saw them kick a girl and her mom out of a 4 person table a couple weeks ago, but they did it with a smile.

They've got good tacos. They'll do just fine in the village.

The Taco Truck Shop is better, although admittedly its in Hoboken. Still, the attitude at Taqueria is over the top.

To summarize Taqueria:

-Pretty good, authentic, Mexican food.

-Owners, who on their bad days, truly disdain their customers.

I've never gotten the sense of warmth from the place, and though I'm a child of the 70's, it feels like shrine to the owners' lost youth.

The male owner can be a particular asshole. The last and final time I ate there, he couldn't understand the pronunciation of my name, even after I told him clearly twice--he just rolled his eyes, shook his head, and walked away.

That's when I decided I was done with Taqueria.

Visited Taqueria shortly after moving to JC a little over 4 years ago and never went back. Never understood why people get so turned on by this place. Their tacos were average, at best. The service was indifferent. I always tell anyone wanting true, authentic Mexican food to trek down to Bayonne and visit El Aguila Dorada. Once I discovered THAT place, it became my golden standard by which all other Mexican places in the area get evaluated. Mind you, I am no Mexican, but I married one that was born and raised down there, and she concurs. Of course, to each their own, and I actually wish Taqueria well. I rather have a functional, profitable business in DTJC, instead of another failed one, but I am not supporting them.

i guess it's authentic mexican to have a very limited menu of 5 things and ACDC bar stools.

I've been to Taqueria many times over the years and never experienced any rudeness. Maybe curt service, but heck, this is a place where you order at a counter and take a number. This is not fine dining.

Their food, in my experience, has always been excellent. The pork and lamb tacos are superb. It does remind of the taqueria-style food that I ate when I lived in Southern AZ. The chili-cheese tamales are my perfect comfort food.

We brought my boyfriend's older brother, a blue-collar guy from upstate NY, there the other day (someone who would feel very put off by pretentiousness), and he couldn't stop raving about the food (he had the hominy pork soup, which I've never tried). There menu is fairly normal sized for a Mexican place -- plenty of choices between tamales, tacos, burritos, quesadilla, etc. They usually have a couple daily specials as well. The service is always speedy.

Anyway, I just wanted to vouch for what I think is a pretty good JC business, that is running things there own way (ACDC stools, 90s music, and all). If you don't like it, certainly don't go there. (Also don't go there if you don't like the song "Black Hole Sun." They really love that song.)

Based on the line when I go, it doesn't look like they are suffering for business. More pork tacos for me!

Viewpoints about the owners' service/attitude aside, it actually is quite common for taquerias / taco stands in LA and much of the Southwest to have a limited menu focused on tacos.

I've been going to this place pretty regularly since they've opened. I really don't get the attitude complaints. They've never failed to greet me by name and always ask how I'm doing. Some nights they're so busy, the exchange is very brief and business like. They've NEVER been rude to me. I've experienced far worse at the hands of the Hard Grove staff. As I've said in an earlier post, my relationship with Taqueria is fairly uncomplicated: I give 'em money, they give me tacos. They usually say "thank you" and "enjoy," too. Maybe the complainers are a tad high maintenance? If you want the warm fuzzies, then I recommend Sava's, where the owner calls everyone "honey" or "baby" and you end up feeling like she's the Polish grandmother you never had. Of course, these same people are probably the ones who would complain about Sava's decor.

you walk in
you look at menu
you order
you pay
you sit down

Where is there time for anyone to be rude? And who cares, its a great taco joint.

I lived in south Texas for ten years, traveled everywhere in Mexico. Have good friends from Texas (native) who live in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The first time I dragged them - after weeks of goading and pleading - to Taqueria, they were so ready to shoot it down. One of them asked directly: "Why are you wasting all of our time bringing us to Jersey City for tacos?"

Five minutes later when our food came out, they were all raving: posting comments on Facebook to the effect that they'd found the best Mexican food north of Nuevo Laredo, etc. That kind of thing.

Taqueria rules. Taqueria beats the pants off of 99.9% of the taco joints in San Antonio and Austin (and I get the apples-oranges things about comparing true Mex to Tex-Mex, but still). And that's about the highest praise I can offer. If you don't like it, eat wherever you like. But it still rules.

Also: never had any issues with rudeness, etc. The place is phenomenal, and Jersey City is lucky to have it.
