If you re-use the coax, I would imagine any benefits brought by the fiber-optic cables would be negated.

Or am I just totally wrong on this one?

We haven?t gotten the notice that our street is enabled yet, but in preparation for that I have some questions that may be more general wiring issues than FIOS questions,? still, I?d be interested in some opinions before I contact Verizon so I don?t sound like a total dolt?

In our brownstone, the land line (DSL , phone) comes to a phone box in the back of the building, while the cable (Comcast) comes in at the front. We own/live-in the building and have 2 tenants, all with the same setup.

From looking at the installation topic on the FIOS website, it looks like they run fiber optic cable all the way to the house and terminate it at a ?new FIOS box.? I?m assuming this new box is a junction that converts between optical and the existing copper wire at the building.

If I go with FIOS for TV / phone / internet ?
- would the one new box in the back be the only device necessary in case my tenants want FIOS later for phone/internet?? Or,? is it one ?new? box per phone line?...
- would I need a second conversion box in the front of the building if I want to piggyback off the existing Comcast RF wiring? If so, would a 2nd box increase the cost of installation?...

Recently, I did a home theater renovation in our living room and hid all the Cable RF wire into the wall. I?d hate to cut/patch/paint any new holes.

Any ideas / suggestions / theories would be welcome! TIA!

Hello,

Does anyone know the contact rep for Verizon Fios for the downtown Jersey City area? A name or phone number would be greatly appreciated.

The "rep" is in a call center sitting in a cubicle with 100's of other "reps" and could be located in a number different states.

Try this:
Verizon High Speed Internet
800-567-6789
Customer Service - Monday-Friday 8:00am - 6:00pm ET
Technical Support 24/7

With Fios you have the option not to sign a contract, but if you don't, the prices are higher. For example, internet service is $47.99/mo with contract, or $55.99/mo without contract.

If you sign up for Fios you'll need to sign a contract too. Sure you can get Comcast without a contract, but the service and prices are terrible. So it's a tradeoff. One year is nothing. I'm already almost done with my 2 year Directv contract and can't believe how fast the time went by.

I disagree. I have Directv, and I love it. To me, Comcast is the one that eats dic..... err... isn't good.

And the customer abusing duopoly continues. Someone needs to eat Verizon's and Comcast's lunch when it comes to cost effective Broadband, like the independent VOIP services have done to phone. Comcast's VOIP is a ripoff too.

Vonage finally got me away from the ripoff MCI landline I had. I got MCI originally for a "$30" flat monthly, $50 after the BS fees, then they just bumped it up to $70, for a landline!! I ditched them for a $20/mo after fees Vonage. I want these big telecoms to compete on price rather than advertising us to death. They're hugely profitable.

Seems like $47.99 is the price if you don't have Verizon home phone service.
See: http://www22.verizon.com/Residential/FiOSInternet/Plans/Plans.htm

Download up to 10 Mbps / Upload up to 2 Mbps
Wireless router included Included for one computer

$42.99/mo. with Verizon home phone service
$47.99/mo without Verizon home phone service

I live on 5th between Erie and Jersey and this morning, 2 Verizon trucks were busy at work.

I asked the guys about it and they confirmed they were stringing fibre for FiOS. It should be hot by the beginning of next week and he thought the Verizon database would be updated in the first two weeks of next year.

To hell with Comcast, hello fibre.

How much are you paying for your level of VIOS service?

Yesterday they started stringing up FIOS cabling all over the Hamilton Park area. Today they were on Jersey Ave. near Newark Ave.

The wait is killing me...

I had it for a little over a year further out in the suburbs and it is well worth the slight additional cost. I personally have found Tech support with them extremely helpful and quick. But thats just my experiences....

I was the second person in Downtown JC to get DSL and I do computer support work so I'm watching this like a hawk!

Yes, they're going north on Jersey Ave. And they're trying to sell it to the major property developers (some are my clients) so I really think we'll have connections starting within 6 month. Costs less than Comcast but a bit more than DSL and speeds are almost 5X both upstream and down.

Don't bother calling Verizon or using their web site with your home phone number. When you see that new 1.5" diameter cable run down your block AND you see new boxes on the corner poles THEN it might be available-

I saw the Verizon truck with a HUGE spindle of fiber optic wires with them this morning at the corner of Jersey and Mercer. Looks like they are getting ready to load the area up. Anyone else notice updates around DT?

Yea, that is what i meant, thanks!

The Verizon rep said i would be able to switch from Verizon Highspeed directly to FIOS w/o any chargers/problems... sounds like a lot of BS to me. Anyone tried this had any problems?

If you mean where they are putting up cable; I saw them a couple of days ago doing Bright St, then yesterday the end of Jersey Ave and Grand St. I believe they started north and now they're at the southern end of downtown.

i got a call back from my building manager in regards to installing directv and it looks like i won't be able to do that because of the wires they'd need to drop from the roof to my 1st floor apartment that faces the street in a historic brownstone building in the hamilton park area, BUT he told me that they're in process of wiring our building for verizon fios and he said it should be available within a month or so.
