Of course. There's nothing stopping anyone from paying the regular weekend rate, which is $5 each way. But, I guess if you want to save $7, you can do the swipe at Exchange Place and then take advantage of the ferry transfer ticket handed out at the station.

You can walk all the way from the Westfield Mall to Brookfield Place, and once inside Brookfield Place you can exit from the western most entrance and be just one block away from the ferry terminal area.

Technically, yes. But, it can be done mostly indoors, so while the walk is long, it is much more pleasant than the massively windy JC waterfront walk from the Harborside ferry pier to Exchange Place, especially considering the cold weather we are expecting this weekend.

No. You have to pay at Exchange Place or WTC to get two tickets.

ORIGINATING AT WORLD TRADE CENTER: Customers will be required to pay their usual PATH fare by entering World Trade Center Station to receive their ferry transfer ticket from a PATH representative before proceeding to the ferry. Upon arrival in Jersey City, the passenger will be admitted into Exchange Place Station by presenting the remaining portion of their ferry ticket for collection by a PATH representative.

http://www.panynj.gov/alerts-advisori ... ath-weekend-closures.html

By the way, it's a long walk from WTC to the ferry.

Possibly dumb question. . .I haven't done the weekend WTC thing yet, but this weekend I have plans that will have me ride the 33rd St train into Manhattan, but then ideally returning from WTC on Sat eve. Will I be able to get a free ferry ride back to Harborside, if I didn't take the PATH/ferry to Exchange Place/WTC on my way in? In other words, do you have to do it as a round trip in order to benefit from the free ferry?

So, the signage says the WTC station closes at 11:59pm Friday.

I had some wishful thinking on a Friday evening hoping it'd be generous and that the last train would be the last one *departing* before 11:59pm, but it was as posted.

So the last train would be the one departing Newark at 11:20pm.

In case anyone was wondering.

I'm not a regular ferry rider so I only just noticed that after arriving to Harborside from Brookfield, it goes to Paulus Hook. I would think that after checking your ticket at Brookfield, they won't care to check that everyone who boarded with the "free transfer" actually gets off at Brookfield. Likely, you could stay on the boat (if Paulus Hook is closer to your destination) but not do it reverse - they are probably not accepting the ferry transfers for boarding at Paulus Hook.

There are two ferry stops... I assume you can choose where to board... and the one with the bar/restaurant is closer.

Bad assumption: the free transfer is only available at one ferry location, but the good news is that the ferry stop in use is the one at Harborside.

From the PA press release:
During this time, PATH service to World Trade Center will terminate at Exchange Place Station. Each Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., transfer will be available for NY Waterway ferry service between Harborside Ferry Landing in Jersey City and Brookfield Place Terminal in New York City.

What's the alternative for someone that needs to get to WTC during weekends?

Riding thee 33RD St line from Grove is only an option if you don't mind wasting a ton of time. In addition to the Hoboken detour, you would then have to transfer to the subway in Manhattan, or walk a lot. I can think of three options, and they are all time consuming:
- get off at 9th St and walk down two blocks to the NE entrance of the 4th St subway station and from there ride the E down to WTC.
- get off at Christopher St and walk all the way to WTC, which is a longer walk than walking from Exchange Place to the ferry.
- if avoiding the weather is the ultimate goal, then ride the PATH to 33rd and then switch to the subway there, which avoids any outside exposure.

None of the options above are particularly convenient, really.

Correct, you pay a PATH fare at Exchange Place to get the round-trip ferry ticket, and on the way back, you don't pay another PATH fare.

I assume you can still buy single ferry tickets (more expensive than PATH fares) or use your monthly pass.

So for the price of a single PATH fare you get a round trip ferry ticket ?

Not sure why this is so surprising. If you are headed into Manhattan, and the WTC PATH is not running, how would you get back?? They have to give you a roundtrip ticket on your way out of EXP so you can complete your trip to/from NYC.

I already said it twice and this is my 3rd time, YES. (I didn't say it made sense.)

New info for those who haven't ridden - there is wording on the ferry ticket to the effect of, only valid during the weekend issued.

While this is a "solution", it is still quite easy to game the system: for someone wanting to ride the ferry into lower Manhattan, it would be cheaper to walk into the Exchange Place station, pay the PATH fare, grab a transfer ticket, and then walk right out. I wonder if they have thought of that.

The transfer ticket is for a round trip (2 tear-off portions) so if you are just going to Exchange Place and walking, you don't even need to pay a return PATH fare. (For me, the trade-off is a longer walk on both ends.)

The difference is that the MTA answers to the NYC and NYS governments. The subway shutdown had political implications.

The PA answers to no one, certainly not to the citizens, so whatever harebrained plan they propose is (almost) beyond oversight. Crazy, really.

The solution for the L train was to shut it down for, drum roll please, weekends! Just like for the PATH train.

this was crazy-making. and yes, PATH should/could find a reasonable workaround, but they have zero incentive.

They are handing out the transfer tickets from inside the paid fare zone at WTC and at Exchange Place. You have to enter the station, go through the turnstile, get your paper ticket, then exit the station. Old school, but at least it works.

They really should add service on the 33rd St. line. Or "lines" -- they ought to get rid of the combined JSQ-HOB detour on weekends.
