Heights: Teen thugs taken after victim IDs pair on video

Jan 16 -- MICHAELANGELO CONTE -- JERSEY JOURNAL

When a Jersey City man reported being beaten and robbed on Saturday, police reviewed closed circuit television video and were able to spot the two 17-year-old suspects walking into a Heights home where they were later arrested, officials said.

The 31-year-old man told police he was walking on Newark Avenue at Chestnut Avenue at 3:07 a.m. when two boys approached him on mountain bikes and demanded money, reports said. Both boys punched the Webster Avenue man until he fell and then kicked him while on the ground before taking his wallet and cell phone, reports said.

The victim reported the crime to North District police and by 3:22 a.m. CCTV operators had located two boys fitting the description of the attackers at Central Avenue and Thorne Street, reports said.

Officers watched the pair go into a residence on Thorne Street and police staked out the house while the victim viewed the video and identified them as his attackers, reports said.

Four police cars converged on the Thorne Street location, where Sgt. Bill Logan immediately grabbed one of the boys as he walked out the front door, reports said. The second boy ran into an apartment, where he pushed and swung at officers before being handcuffed, reports said, adding he was still wearing a ski mask.

Police found one of the boys was carrying the victim's cell phone, but it did not appear his wallet was recovered, according to police reports.
