Sadly, I drive down to Monmouth County in the summer to play my golf. The only course I have played around here was OverPeck which is north of the Meadowlands. I played OverPeck 2 summers ago and I recall the geese were fertilizing all over the course but I wasn't going to complain since it was kind of nearby.

I hate how NJ sets up its public course system. NY State all it takes is to be a NY State resident and you get the discounts and access to all of the New York State Public courses. This county resident thing in NJ is stupid. Especially when you are a Hudson County resident and there are no public courses for you to play.

Used to be a 2 rounds a week golfer and even brought out my clubs to the US - strictly an irons guy with only 1 driver (Big Bertha)
Unfortunately haven't played in a long while.

The closest golf course mileage wise in NJ is probably Weequahic in Newark – about 15 minutes by car. It’s not in the greatest location but it’s not a bad track and you can get on relatively easy. I usually walk-on early Saturday mornings within 10 minutes if I’m by myself or 20 minutes with a buddy or two and the pace of play is good – 4 to 4.5 hours for a round. It’s probably the easiest course to walk-on in our immediate area – no reserved tee times for us since we’re not Essex county residents. Greens fee is $42 on weekends which is probably the best we’re going to find in our part of Jersey.

Essex County does have a rate where non-residents can pay $250 for an annual pass and pay county rates at Weequahic anytime of day and after 12pm at Hendricks and Francis Byrne and make reservations 5 days in advance. It’d make the greens fee $21 I think. I might invest in that next year.

PM me if you’re interested in playing sometime. I usually shoot high 80s – low 90s (nobody’s ever mistaken me for Tiger Woods!).

yeah, the Lincoln Park golf range isn't the greatest, but it's something... that's where I normally go... driving from downtown gives you a nice tour of JC... :) once in awhile I head over to Edgewater, but that get's way to crowded... especially if you want to hit your woods or driver... you have to wait a fair amount of time, since you can't hit your woods/driver on the 2nd floor...

Or he plays at La Tourette in Staten Island - you can take the ferry then its like a $10 cab ride to the course.

If you drive, I'd also throw in Marine Park golf course, by exit 11 on the Belt Parkway and Flatbush Avenue.

Definitely tough to find an inexpensive yet uncrowded course around here. Essex has a couple of county courses, Hendricks Field in Belleville and Francis Byrne in W. Orange that are on the cheap side -- no frills and lots of people, though.

Two other places within a 30-40 min drive are Meadows Golf Club in Lincoln Park, near Willowbrook Mall, and East Orange Golf Course in Short Hills. These are in the $40-50/round range (which around here still qualifies as cheap).

If you can stand the 1-hr+ drive, there are lots of great "mountain golf" courses in Sussex County. My favorites are Farmstead (27 holes, nice layout, lots of wildlife) and Ballyowen (super-expensive, but you'll feel like you're in the Scottish highlands).

I was curious to know if anyone on this forum play's golf... I'm trying to find out what's the closest golf course around the area... I know there isn't any in the Hudson County with the exception of Liberty National which is a high-end/private course... are there any decent courses in Bergen/Essex/Union that don't cost an arm and a leg, and that don't get to over crowded? I shoot in the high 90's and definitely need practice, so I'm just trying to get out and play without traveling to far...
