Jersey City Ward E city council race: Incumbent Solomon vs. Team Fulop challenger Hudnut

Jersey City’s Downtown Ward E is the largest and the wealthiest of the city’s six wards. With plenty of mass transit, developers are tripping over each other to build anywhere close to the city’s waterfront.

But there’s also overcrowding in the public schools and the ever-present fear that the working class will be priced out of Downtown.

With a population (69,320) that would make Downtown the 18th largest municipality in the state, the council race between incumbent James Solomon, seeking his second term, and Jake Hudnut, the city’s municipal prosecutor, has some added importance.

Solomon does not stand with people who pays property tax. He is the one who sponsored the 2 to 4 property owner bill that puts non-owner property under rent control. Rent Control is governed by the Consumer Price Index, so when taxes rises, the tenants cannot pay that increase. But the small homeowner who lives in his 2 to 4 family home as well as one family and condo owners will get the tax increase. JC must pay $250 million more to the public schools and what that does is exempt tenants from that obligation even if they have children in the school.

Hotel Trades Council supports Solomon after endorsing most of Team Fulop in Jersey City

By John Heinis/Hudson County View

“Councilman Solomon has stood with the Hotel Trades Council and our members in some of our toughest fights in Jersey City. He was a tireless advocate against AirBnb’s proliferation of illegal hotels throughout the city and stood with us when we pushed back against their multi-million-dollar ballot initiative to overturn the city’s ordinance,” HTC President Rich Maroko said in a statement.

“Over the last four years, he has stood up for hotel workers and for all working-class people in Downtown Jersey City. Based on that track record, we know that we can count on Councilman Solomon to advocate for our members and for working people throughout Jersey City.”
