State legislators have clearly heard this message, floating proposals to ban not just plastic grocery bags, but all single-use bags?paper or plastic.

Working its way though the legislature right now is S2776. As written, the legislation would ban food service businesses and other retailers who have stores larger than 1,000 square feet from providing their customers with plastic bags. The bill would also naturally ban plastic straws.

Violators would be fined anywhere from $500 to $5,000 depending on the number of offenses.

annoying but necessary. recycling is just a band-aid. we need to stop consuming single-use plastic crap.

One resident struggles to say goodbye to her ?guilty pleasure? at plastic bag ban event

Posted Jun 15, 8:28 PM
By Adrienne Romero | The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY ? Hundreds of local residents stopped by Grove Street on Saturday to trade in their plastics for reusable bags in preparation for the ban, effective on June 28. But one attendee is still on the brink of the switch.

Kimberly Phillip , who attended ?Bagapalooza? at City Hall Plaza, said she carries her whole life in plastic bags, but is trying to step away from it and move on to reusables. Phillip added that the city implementing the plastic bag ban is good because then she?ll be forced to go without it.

I do. It isn't difficult. Single-use plastic has been around for one generation. Giving it up will not send us back to the caves.

The Hoboken Shoprite charges 10cents per sturdy re-usable plastic bag.

I bought a bunch of fabric ones similar to what Brewster posted from Amazon. We've been stocking up on Target and ACME bags for a while.

A small step in the right direction, but we are going to have to do a lot more. We need a single use plastic ban. Beverages can go in cans a bottles. And we will figure out the rest.

I'm sure they wouldn't refuse your finest cutlery if you actually gave a rat's ass.

On a brighter note, plastic utensils are still recyclable while bags... not so much.

We've got a pile of canvas style bags to grab when actually grocery shopping, and the little stuffsack nylon bags to (hopefully) have in your pocket or bag for a quick unplanned shop. The latter are like $2-3 each on Amazon in package of 4-8 bags.

We had gotten a few ChicoBags as premiums from WNYC, and they're great. A little more expensive at $6 each. But they will custom print them, and someone could probably do pretty well selling ones with branding or cute locally inspired graphics.

Keeping the large supermarket bags in your car should be easy. Maybe two folded ones in the stroller?

I found these in Amazon.

The reviews are fairly solid. There are other choices, but they are thinner and unable to hold much weight, according to reviews. Of course, you can always double bag them.

INFORMATION ON JERSEY CITY'S BAG BAN

Jersey City will enforce a city-wide ban on single-use plastic carry-out bags STARTING JUNE 28, 2019.

The City of Jersey City Municipal Council passed Ordinance 18-065 ,which prohibits retailers from providing single-use plastic carry-out bags and non-recyclable paper bags to customers at the checkout counter of retail stores.

Instead, customers will need to bring their own bag or use an alternative bag provided by retailers.

This ordinance affects all retailers, including grocery stores, restaurants, corner stores, pharmacies, clothing shops, hardware stores, beer and liquor stores, and every other retail store that provides bags to customers at point of sale.
The purpose of this ban is to reduce litter, protect the environment, and remove hard-to-recycle bags from our waste stream.

So where is this solar, Obama gave millions? In the meanwhile, traditional sources are being stopped and more buildings are going up.

While this is slightly off the topic, the environmentalists who want to ban plastic bags are also opposed to new sources of energy. I had a brownout recently, there is so much construction going on in Hudson County, especially JC, that this issue cannot be ignored. It is similar to everyone sharing the old telephone party line.
