Thank you for the link. Really interesting pictures. I never realized how much of that terminal is off limits or not visible to the casual observer.

Would LOVE to see pictures of this. I wonder if it is similar to the City Hall station that is off limits to the public but which still retains a lot of the original details, including great skylights and windows.

Hoboken Reporter used to have a whole bunch of photos. Today however, you get a 404 error.

I somehow got into a ?behind the scenes? tour of Hoboken Terminal around the time the article in the OP was written (2005 or so). The upstairs area is HUGE. There were still black coverings on the skylights dating to WW2.

The rep from NJT on that tour said something about turning it into a rentable ballroom for events, a food court, offices, or some combination of all of those things. Would love to see something come of it. Such a great space, but it needs a lot of work for sure.

Somewhere in my archives I can probably find pics

the 2nd floor of Hoboken station is spectacular. Most of the public is not permitted up that grand stairwell, but if you ever have the chance, you'll find a grand hall that could easily accommodate tons of stores/restaurants. It's a huge missed opportunity until/unless it is realized. They can do it without any new construction or change in use, so would actually not need Zoning/Planning Board approval. However, I believe it's part of a larger plan for the plaza, etc. over there which I assume is the cause for delay.

It's still very much an active plan.

(I would not want to build in Hoboken because they're all sorts of hoops they make developers jump through then they change their hearts last minute to deny or slow approval. Although NJ Transit is immune from local zoning, they've been playing nice with Hoboken, trying to come to an amendable agreement for political reasons. Personally, I wish the legislature would pass a law ordering NJ Transit to tell Hoboken to flick off and develop the lands to the highest and best use so the revenue can go towards improving NJ Transit. The land is too valuable to the economic health of New Jersey to be pussyfooting with a fiefdom.)
