Having said that, the corner of 1st and Marin has gotten increasingly worse for the past few years. Friday and Saturday evenings are particularly bad. As a neighbor and regular patron of O'Hara's, I wish they would do a better job of NOT courting certain clientele, and not keep serving people to the point they leave their place obviously intoxicated. We have had SO MANY problems with people leaving there completely wasted and then driving away. Every Friday and Saturday evening is a veritable shitshow on our street: people leave drunk at closing time, litter all over the street, leave glasses or bottles thrown all over the place, pee on the street or in between cars, and often get into arguments and fights. It was only a matter of time before things escalated to this.

Espada, Four prior convictions. At least one for assault as recent as 2013. Why was he still on the street?

A Hoboken man died early Sunday morning after he was assaulted in Downtown Jersey City just over 24 hours earlier, authorities said.

Luis Rivera, 38, died following Saturday's physical altercation in the area of First Street and Marin Boulevard, said Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. The cause and manner of death are being determined by the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office.

Joshua Espada, 29, was arrested Tuesday on Academy Street in Jersey City and charged with aggravated assault in the second degree. He is currently being housed at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny, where he will remain until his first court appearance, Suarez said.

Police officers responding to the report of a street fight found Rivera lying unresponsive on the ground with apparent facial wounds at approximately 3 a.m. Saturday. Rivera was treated by emergency medical personnel before taken to the Jersey City Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at approximately 4:10 a.m. Sunday, Suarez added.

In 2013, Espada was charged with three counts of aggravated assault when authorities said he and two other men assaulted another man in Jersey City, The Jersey Journal reported. The disposition of that case was not immediately available.

Rivera worked as a superintendent at Katerra, a technology company that recently merged with Fields Construction of Hoboken.

3 men charged in Jersey City attack: cops

Three men were arrested in Jersey City Saturday after they hit several men, including knocking the teeth out of one man's mouth, a criminal complaint states.

Cassanova Pena, 35, Elizabeth, Marcelino Ramos Jr., 30, and Joshua Espada, 24, both of Jersey City were charged with aggravated assault during an altercation with three men in Jersey City on Saturday, a report states.

Witnesses at the scene that they saw three men assaulting an unknown man in front of 200 Newark Avenue around 2:51 a.m. Saturday, reports state. When they tried to stop the assault, the three men began striking them.

During the altercation, Espada allegedly hit one of the men in the arm with a plastic crate, possibly breaking his arm, the report states.

Espada was charged with hitting another man in the head with a plastic crate, causing a laceration above his left ear, the report states. All three were charged with aggravated assault on a third man, who lost a tooth and loosened several more teeth during the assault, reports state.

More information on the attack was not immediately available.

Ramos and Pena are charged with one count of aggravated assault, reports state. Espada is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and weapons charges, reports state.

All three appeared in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City this afternoon via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny. Bail for Espada, who has three prior convictions, and Ramos, who had four prior arrests, was set at $35,000 with a 10 percent option.

Ramos was also found to have warrants from Jersey City and the Hudson County Superior Court at a no bail status.

Pena, who has 10 prior arrests, had bail set at $50,000 cash or bond.

According to police, on October 20th at approximately 3:00 a.m., Jersey City Police Officers were dispatched to the area of 1st Street and Marin Boulevard in Jersey City on a report of a street fight.

Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive male lying with apparent facial wounds on the ground at that location.

Police identified the victim as Luis Rivera, 38, of Hoboken, and said he was treated at the scene by Emergency Medical Services before being transported to the Jersey City Medical Center.

Doctors pronounced Rivera dead at approximately 4:10 a.m. on October 21, 2018.

The cause and manner of death are pending determination by the Regional Medical Examiner?s Office.

The initial investigation revealed that Rivera was assaulted at that location.

Police say on October 21st, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Joshua Espada, 29, of Jersey City. Espada was charged with Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S. 2C:12-1b(1), a second-degree crime.

On October 23, 2018, shortly after 6:30 a.m., Espada was arrested without incident by members of the Jersey City Police Department on Academy Street in Jersey City according to police.

He was transported to the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office in Jersey City to process his arrest and then to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny where he will remain until his first court appearance authorities said.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the investigation and arrest to the Jersey City Police Department and members of the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Homicide Unit.

The Prosecutor?s Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating the case.
