how would that work, exactly, when the cars are markedly different?

The current PATH cars (PA-5) are basically modified versions of the R142 MTA cars.

By the way, the new countdown screens have popped up at the Harrison station as well. I looked at the serial number sticker on one of the screens and it said ?NYCT? for New York City Transit. I?m pretty sure these screens are the same model that?s used at certain MTA Stations, so maybe there is already some sort of coordination going on behind the scenes.

The countdown screens will just be used to tell you the escalator is broken, elevator is out of order, and there are delays due to signal maintenance.

The investment doesn?t look so bad when you consider how a bus carrying much fewer people costs $300K and just 100 auto drivers buying cars at $25K each would cost $2.5M. Each train car carries thousands of people on average each day.

These exist at a ton of MTA stops and I've never seen a mad rush to reach a train.

They're virtually useless during rush hour, but would certainly be welcome during non-peak so that one doesn't enter the turnstiles with 10-20 minutes of waiting in a tunnel without climate control.

I predict it will just lead to constant disappointment. I wouldn't trust PATH management to accurately tell me when a train is going to arrive at all regardless of what the schedule or computerized real-time train movement monitoring says.

So they can be on their phones of course! Better on the street than standing in front of the turnstiles or on the stairs like they are now.

i'm not talking about the tv monitors. it's a singular monitor that seems to be awaiting some type of signal input or something.

You?re not crazy. There are new ones they recently installed. I saw them putting in wires a week or so ago. Today, I noticed the LED screens were mounted, and operational. It was just a bunch of colors, but they were on.

You guys are right.. my bad. I saw the new fancy ones today.

That was a decade ago. Since then, inflation, tariffs on many of the materials, and all of the gadgetry that make the cars operable with trackside PTC equipment have contributed to an increase in cost. Does all of that justify $1.3M increase in cost per car? Don't know.
Looked a bit into it and NYC MTA bought 1,700 cars at about $1.3 million each. PATH isn't going to get the same economies of scale.

The price of steel has gone up 263% since a decade ago. Subway cars weigh about 80,000 lbs, assuming that most of that weight is steel, the change in steel prices alone could be the main thing causing that price increase.
The Port Authority/PATH should be coordinating its purchases with the NYC MTA in order to get better pricing.

Same. Those LEDs that usually would tell you when the next train is coming have been there for at least 3-5 years.

Note the date on this photo:

They really should. But they do have another one in the station outside of the turnstiles - in the Grove St station - Columbus and Marin entrance. That'll do for now, if a countdown clock is what it really is.

Obviously, someone has to get their cut.

The PANYNJ's lack of proper, vigilant stewardship of taxpayer's money is really disappointing.

Also, it should be pointed out that the subject of the article is NOT a given. It is just a proposal.

Transportation on the rails should ease with new cars.
