The countdown screens will just be used to tell you the escalator is broken, elevator is out of order, and there are delays due to signal maintenance.

The investment doesn?t look so bad when you consider how a bus carrying much fewer people costs $300K and just 100 auto drivers buying cars at $25K each would cost $2.5M. Each train car carries thousands of people on average each day.

how would that work, exactly, when the cars are markedly different?

I predict it will just lead to constant disappointment. I wouldn't trust PATH management to accurately tell me when a train is going to arrive at all regardless of what the schedule or computerized real-time train movement monitoring says.

These exist at a ton of MTA stops and I've never seen a mad rush to reach a train. They're virtually useless during rush hour, but would certainly be welcome during non-peak so that one doesn't enter the turnstiles with 10-20 minutes of waiting in a tunnel without climate control.

So they can be on their phones of course! Better on the street than standing in front of the turnstiles or on the stairs like they are now.

The price of steel has gone up 263% since a decade ago. Subway cars weigh about 80,000 lbs, assuming that most of that weight is steel, the change in steel prices alone could be the main thing causing that price increase.

I think the countdown clock would be useful at street level to avoid going into the pit of hell on a hot summer?s day. Also, the title of this thread is misleading as it won?t happen until 2022. Who knows how many more bodies will be crammed into Grove St station at that time.

Why would anybody want a countdown clock at street level? You'll end up with a bunch of morons chaotically trying to cram themselves down the entrance to the station at the same time.

You?re not crazy. There are new ones they recently installed. I saw them putting in wires a week or so ago. Today, I noticed the LED screens were mounted, and operational. It was just a bunch of colors, but they were on.

Same. Those LEDs that usually would tell you when the next train is coming have been there for at least 3-5 years.

They really should. But they do have another one in the station outside of the turnstiles - in the Grove St station - Columbus and Marin entrance. That'll do for now, if a countdown clock is what it really is.

I recently noticed a monitor hanging from the middle of the ceiling on the platform level of grove street station. it seems new to me....could it perhaps be a much-needed proper countdown clock? if so, they should install at street level imo

The last round of cars worked out to, what, about $1.5M per car?
That was a decade ago. Since then, inflation, tariffs on many of the materials, and all of the gadgetry that make the cars operable with trackside PTC equipment have contributed to an increase in cost. Does all of that justify $1.3M increase in cost per car? Don't know.

Obviously, someone has to get their cut. The PANYNJ's lack of proper, vigilant stewardship of taxpayer's money is really disappointing. Also, it should be pointed out that the subject of the article is NOT a given. It is just a proposal.
