Jersey City mourns 'up and coming' firefighter killed in car crash Updated 4:01 PM; Posted 3:58 PM By Caitlin Mota The Jersey Journal JERSEY CITY - The 29-year-old off-duty firefighter killed in an early morning crash died two days before he was set to take his promotional test to become a captain with the Jersey City Fire Department. Matthew Nierstedt, a decorated veteran with the U.S. Navy, was the backseat passenger in a vehicle involved in a two-car crash on Paterson Plank Road near Congress Street. N.J. firefighter killed in crash served in the Navy Updated 12:23 AM; Posted 12:16 AM By Caitlin Mota The Jersey Journal JERSEY CITY - The firefighter killed in a violent early morning car collision today was a U.S. Navy veteran who joined the fire department last year. Matthew Nierstedt was a passenger in a vehicle involved in the head-on collision near Congress Street and Paterson Plank Road at about 2 a.m. Sources say at least one of the drivers was seriously injured. Nierstedt was sworn in as a firefighter on Nov. 16, 2016.
