No, they don't! The article clearly states that the suspect was not the passenger being dropped off. Instead it was some random dude that jumped into the front seat as the Uber driver was dropping off his fare.

In any case, he was later identified. I do hope they throw the book at this guy. The driver did nothing wrong, despite what the resident deranged xenophobe (heights) said in his posts. People love to disparage Uber/Lyft/taxi drivers, but that's just an easy, convenient scapegoat. The driving culture around here is just atrocious, as well as that of cyclists and pedestrians, and the police and city government should comprehensively deal with it before it gets any worse.

Growing up in NYC these stories were a lot more common in the era of "Gypsy Cabs." Our cities are safer now, and companies like Uber/Lyft can provide some trackability and accountability that did not exist before. But it does underscore the concern some have with companies that work a grey market.

A lot of the taxi industry's objections to ride sharing companies may be based on rent seeking. But there are legitimate concerns to address as well.

To me UBER / Lyft are gypsy cabs. No accountability when you're an "unmarked" car.

they're hardly "unmarked cars" since you have to download the app whether acting as a driver or passenger so all personal data is collected moron

The universe of not provoking others to attack in retaliation. Being ignorant of not considering fellow drivers, bikers, or pedestrians along with being obnoxious can ignite certain attitudes.

Seems like a lot of people here would say the same thing about you. I just hope you are just as understanding and nonchalant if one day you irked someone by mouth off and they decided to react to you in the same way as this violent criminal

What I meant by warranted was that the driver may have brought it upon himself. They have a way of irking people around them. People are humans and react accordingly.

UBER and LYFT ma be good for passengers but not for fellow drivers and bikers who share the road with them. These make-shift cabbies seem to stop where ever they want and how ever they want. They are constantly in the way parking off corners, out into the lane, always trying to figure out where they are and where their fare's are. The drive timid and slow and wickedly fast around turns. As they wait for their fare in the dark of night they do not use their parking lights or hazard blinkers just their binding headlights. And when you bring something to their attention they look at you like a deer staring at the headlights barely mumbling. They are a haphazard on our roads with no remorse or fear of reprimand. Maybe the beating was warranted.

Aw, look! The resident xenophobe is back!! Probably forgot to take his meds and is now suffering an episode.

REALLY?! The beating was warranted?? I hope they catch the lowlife that beat up the driver and that he gets charged and prosecuted.
