I use to take my niece and nephew to the do it yourself carwash and let THEM do all the cleaning, they loved playing with the soap, hose, vacuum, their little fingers could fit into tiny crevices..then I would take them for ice cream, I'd have a squeaky clean car and they had a blast.

I also once gave my nephew 10$, he climbed under the kitchen sink, gutted everything out, cleaned it, assembled a shelfy thing from BB&B, put everything back, my eyes brimmed with tears of joy every time I opened the door.

For 20$ each, I got them to paint the bathroom, they had a ball.

I could go on and on...they were ecstatic to get the cash and learned the meaning of earning a buck.

Staten Island Zoo, a hidden gem. What about the beach?

Movies at the AMC in the Newport Mall are $7 before noon and you can reserve your seats ahead of time.

If you are comfortable lugging them into the city, Staten Island Ferry is a free cruise on the Hudson.

If they like outdoorsy stuff, 30-40 minute drive to the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge

Here are some ideas:

http://www.hudsonplaynj.com/

Liberty State Park - Interpretive Center:
http://www.libertystatepark.com/interpre.htm

Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island trip

Stephen Greg Park in Bayonne - they have an estuary walk that is free and a lot of fun for bird and nature watching. Pack a picnic lunch. (I know you said, besides parks, but this place is really nice).

One day at the movies

RPM Raceway (a little pricey but fun)

https://www.bambinochef.com/classes-events
(closed until 9/5 - on Newark Avenue)

BOWLING! Hudson Lanes in Jersey City

First time posting after a lot of lurking on here and looking for some advice from fellow JC listers:
My wife is away for the next 10 days and since all camps are long over, I have just under a week to keep my kids from killing each other before shipping them back to school. I was just told that my 10 year old is now way too old for the Ikea ball pit. It's been a while since I've had to do this for so many consecutive days. Any suggestions for what to do this week for grade school kids in JC or a short drive besides the parks and Liberty Science Center?

Here's hoping that I'll keep my sanity!
