That's not the bottleneck, though. The trains run on a schedule. It's not like if they haul their asses down to the other end faster, that they would be departing quicker. The PATH schedule is actually fairly predictable, when there aren't technical issues and it's inclusive of checks that they need to do when they arrive at a terminal.

Not to mention that at least at this very moment, PATH is probably the most reliable commuter system in the region.

Every transit system in the United States operates at a loss. Transit doesn't make money on our fares. The money goes to salaries and benefits for employees, electricity (lots of electricity), security, maintenance, all of that track and signal work. All of that is probably half the cost of running PATH. The other half is fixing the escalators at Grove Street over and over and over again.

Apparently the PATH actually loses a ton of money every year? I find that hard to believe given the limited service and the fact that it's packed for every commute. Where is all the money going? I wonder how much more ridership they would need just to break even.

Try watching the staff at the Building Permit office sometime. They make glaciers look like speed demons.


Yes, the PATH is doomed to be slow and packed for years to come. The so-called increases quickly pile up to become what they always were as trains wait for a bay to open at 33rd. But they keep building towers and the solution put forth by most is "wake up earlier". What a disaster.

The cars are less packed, but I would chalk that up to everyone taking the last few weeks of the summer for vacation. Generally summer camps are done and school doesn't start for a few more weeks, so people tend to get out of town. My office is pretty empty also.

Hear! Hear! Agreed. The frequency of every 35 mins is DISMAL at nights/early mornings/late evenings during the weekend... This is 2017, not 1970... even during the day on Sat+Sun, WTC-NWK service could be a lot more frequent.

Also, the whole "go through Hoboken" at weekends is very inefficient, feels like a hack where they have to turn the train around half-way through its journey (again, this is 2017, not 1970), they could continue the HOB-JSQ line at weekends ... OK, if not, then at least increase the frequency of JSQ-HOB-33 during weekend evenings/mornings.

And yes, I was on that PACKED train at 1am... so packed, it feels like rush hour and guess what I waited 30 mins for it...

It's not a pipe dream, PTC installation has been happening for a number of weekends now. It will allow trains to run closer together. Grove St. Station sees a train either departing for NYC or going to JSQ or Newark every 40 seconds during morning rush. That's not bad. What they can do is improve evening and late night service. It shouldn't be standing room only at 2am.

About a year ago they did add some frequency on the JSQ-33rd line. The change in frequency from 5 to 10 minutes is a bit later for both the a.m. and p.m. rush hours.

The idea of an increase in service is a pipe-dream. Whatever goes into 33rd then has to have it's crew switch to the other end of train. Unless you can convince the crews to sprint end to end then the trains will always be what they are. Of course, you could add an actual loop at 33rd for billions of dollars and decades of work...

Actually, forget 10 or 15 ... the frequency at the weekends for WTC is only every 20 minutes...

From Grove St on Sat+Sun, trains to WTC are at 15, 35 and 55 past every hour.

During the mornings, it's even worse, eg on Sunday morning, there is a WTC train at 8:20, 8:55, 9:30 and at 10:05 ... notice that it's every 35 mins! Only 1 train during the whole 9am period.

10 minute headways has been the standard Saturday service on the 33rd line for years, except during occasional track or signal work.

10-min headways would be an improvement on the Nwk-WTC line. I think 15 min was the typical Saturday interval, but there's been work on that line just about every weekend for several years, I forget what "normal" is supposed to be there.
