JERSEY CITY -- A Jersey City woman who thought a man was holding a door open for her at a shopping mall was instead knocked out cold when the man sucker-punched her, Jersey City police said.

The 19-year-old woman, who lost consciousness "temporarily" and suffered a cut above her nose, was leaving JCPenney at the Newport Centre mall in Jersey City at 12:40 p.m. Sunday when the man punched her in the forehead and then fled, the police report said.

Dan Brown, 29, of Manhattan, was charged with aggravated assault, tampering with public records, hindering apprehension and trafficking in personal identification belonging to another person, the complaint said.

He was apprehended with the help of a witness and an of-duty corrections officer, police said. While bystanders helped the woman, a witness followed Brown while on the phone with police and then flagged down a corrections officer, who stopped Brown, the complaint says.

While being processed, Brown gave a false name. Police found he had several ID cards, two social security cards and three public assistance benefit cards on him, the complaint said.

The victim, who refused medical attention, told police that she did not know Brown.

Brown made his first appearance on the charges Monday in Criminal Justice Reform Court in Jersey City via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny. At the hearing, the state moved to detain him through the course of his prosecution. ... punch_by_stranger_in.html
