Trump voter-fraud panel?s data request a gold mine for hackers, experts warn

By ERIC GELLER and CORY BENNETT 07/01/2017 01:00 PM EDT

Cybersecurity specialists are warning that President Donald Trump?s voter-fraud commission may unintentionally expose voter data to even more hacking and digital manipulation.

Their concerns stem from a letter the commission sent to every state this week, asking for full voter rolls and vowing to make the information ?available to the public.? The requested information includes full names, addresses, birth dates, political party and, most notably, the last four digits of Social Security numbers. The commission is also seeking data such as voter history, felony convictions and military service records.

Digital security experts say the commission?s request would centralize and lay bare a valuable cache of information that cyber criminals could use for identity theft scams ? or that foreign spies could leverage for disinformation schemes.

?It is beyond stupid,? said Nicholas Weaver, a computer science professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

I feel the decline started when we started to care more about making record profits every year, which is unsustainable, than we care about workers making a living wage that kept pace with inflation. Putting corporations ahead of all else would never work in the long term.

As far as our place in the future, I hope that it would be part of a welcoming group of countries that are working collectively to improve the world as whole; and focus on the progress of science and technology to help propel us to the next stage of life beyond this planet.

I was meaning to ask you about a recent post where you were describing your utopian view of a global peace and you said America must take it's proper place in the world today.

Curious when you think America went into this decline from its former glory and how do you envision America taking its proper place in the world?

It's going to take a little while to fix the last 8 years, when the US was trying to lead from behind.

Jesus tap dancing Christ. This is exactly the kind of outdated thinking that got us into this mess in the first place. The USA is not the big bully on the block for much longer.

Would you rather find a way to work in the new system or be left out?

What mess are you speaking about? A loud mouth President? We still have it better then anywhere else. C'mon!

Trump has been in office for about 6 months and the rest of the world leaders are already working under the assumption of the USA as a sinking ship. They are discounting us, as a nation, for trade deals (aka jobs and money for American citizens).

You truly are a cartoon... What winning?

Where is the results of his "extreme vetting"? I thought he only needed 60/90 days to figure out a plan. It's been months.

Where is his healthcare that he promised in the first month?

He continues to be a loser and butt of jokes for everyone that isn't stupid.

Give it time. Once his house of cards comes toppling down Republicans won't have a choice. Everyday you think you see a new low bar for how civilized people conduct themselves in public, and then good old Donny comes around to move the bar lower. If I were you JCMan8, I would be thinking of ways to not have the stench of the current POTUS rub off on you. Unless you're okay with his behavior. Then by all means, enjoy the ride!

Some of what he does is unnecessary, but ultimately meaningless in the scheme of things.

I'd prefer he didn't directly engage with scummy media personalities like the people on Morning Joe and instead focused on advancing his agenda, but whatever. He's still making a lot of good moves. And more importantly, continues to be a magnet for winning.

Trump is actively getting investigated for committing a crime. The GOP, his party, is in charge of the House and Senate. Yet, despite controlling most of the government and them refusing to look into the meddling of Russia, Trump is still under criminal investigation. That should tell you something right there.

Trump has been in office for about 6 months and the rest of the world leaders are already working under the assumption of the USA as a sinking ship. They are discounting us, as a nation, for trade deals (aka jobs and money for American citizens).

Foreign leaders use Trump as a punchline in their jokes (see Australia). That reflects poorly on us as well. In essence NOBODY respects him.

China walked all over him after his absurd tough talk regarding North Korea.

Trump talks up Healthcare and says "nobody knew how hard healthcare was" even though every single person knows how difficult it is to put together a plan.

The man is a joke. You want to hitch your train to him and his racist practices, be my guest. When the years go by and they write the history books, they'll notate how Baby Boomers truly are the worst generation America has ever had.

How many people has Biden wished he "punched in the mouth". Quite a few.

And he has some interesting racial/ethnic perspectives on people managing convenience stores.... and I think he considers himself a ladies man the way he like to give "shoulder/back massages" to women on public stages.

Not to mention that moment where he was exhibiting all that Irish charm and he asked a local politician on a stump speech, he never met, to standup and take a bow... from his wheelchair.

Trump and Biden would have been a much more fun race to watch. No one likes to watch people choking and gagging in a public forum.

It is very interesting to see someone so delusional. How will you explain it when President Trump never gets charged with anything nor impeached?

And your point is what? That it is wrong for political operatives to dig up dirt on their opponents? Hillary's 2008 campaign was the original source of the Obama Kenya birth rumor. The DNC setup the whole Russian Trump Dossier.

That's politics and it happen. As to HRC Emails... I wish they would have been able to find the source of the hack. It would have been very embarrassing for Lynch and her DOJ.

This is hilarious, given that it was an ex NYTimes Pulitzer Prize winning reporter who was just fired from CNN for being responsible for-wait for it-fake news reporting!

And, no, the former great Grey Lady isn't just providing op-ed on the op-ed pages. It's all over the paper, every story is colored. I guess when your largest stockholder, Carlos Slim, hates Trump it shouldn't be a surprise. Or over at WaPo, where Bezos maybe hates Trump even more.

Not to mention the a number of reporters / editors who have been let go by the NYT themselves after it was uncovered that some teary eyed exposes, people in the stories (fables) who were quoted or the subject of could not be located. If remember one guy went south to do a hard hitting story on racism... couldn't find any thing sensational so made it up for weeks in his hotel room.

Nothing fake about the expense reports. Comically enough the NYT did follow-up stories about the editor who got fired. He was just trying to give a young guy with promise a break in a tough industry.

Not to mention, just today the New York Times quietly retracted their false claim that all 17 intelligence agencies agreed that Russia hacked into the DNC.

And just 4 days ago, they were snidely ripping into Trump over this, who turned out to be right AGAIN:

"In the Times? White House Memo of June 25, correspondent Maggie Haberman mocked Trump for ?still refus[ing] to acknowledge a basic fact agreed upon by 17 American intelligence agencies that he now oversees: Russia orchestrated the attacks, and did it to help get him elected.?

https://consortiumnews.com/2017/06/29/ ... racts-russia-gate-canard/

This is HUGE. You're telling me that only the FBI, CIA, NSA and Office of the Director of National Intelligence agreed that Russia orchestrated the cyber attacks??

The Coast Guard Intelligence and and Twenty-Fifth Air Force must know the real story. Can't wait to find out.

Don't like the liberal slant of the editorials? Read only the news sections. It's still a better source for facts than any pro-trump " news source" ive ever seen. But maybe this particular open minded liberal hasn't yet been exposed to a decent conservative news source that prints only valid news? Post a link to one you can vouch for and I will read it with an open mind. But here is what I've found wheneve I make an offer like the one above: conservatives CANT provide a link to valid news sources that support their views.

Nope, that's called a deflection. It doesn't even make sense since President Trump doesn't benefit from ratings.

We have CNN's top personalities who promote this Trump Russia stuff - ratings catnip for ignorant "progressives" who look for any excuse they can to bash President Trump - who off camera admit they are selling a boatload of garbage. You've been played.

Do you honestly think think that a man who was obsessed with the ratings of his various TV shows before he was President, and cared enough to tweet about how bad they were after he was already President, does not care about his approval ratings?

To your other point, You keep bringing this up like it's a new problem for either side. Are there people on both sides of the issue that are "ignorant" as you call them, and will believe anything they are told without checking it out for themselves? Of Course there are. CNN and MSNBC play the left just like Trump played you and a good chunk of the country. Manipulating the media and it's viewers is one of, if not the only, thing he is actually good at.
