Due respect to post #13, my apologies for the no reply although I fully agree, sustainability is TOTALLY anathema to the capitalist ethos (not as though this is some big revelation since we all know this is true.)

But a yeah, post #14, absolutely yeah, all day and everyday! I'll dominate, as always I have. Not only is Capitalism (and any socioeconomic system rooted in MONEY, like communism or socialism) the root cause of litter in the hood, it is the root cause of ALL societal malaise. The fact that this very truth is somehow lost in your thinking, that you are totally oblivious to the deleterious impacts of Capitalism -- or any "ism" based upon a money/market system -- says a whole lot about YOU. That you worship at the alter of said paradigm. And anyone who knows anything has certainly read Hemingway's short story "A Clean Well Lighted Place," in which Hemingway himself starts going off about nada y nada y nada y nada. That's all Capitalism is about....Nada y nada y nada y nada.

Chuck this slavery system, the one in which the slaves now have to pay for their housing and their food. As opposed to the prior, in which the dominator actually had to PAY for food and shelter of their "property." Nowadays, the slaves must pay for their food and their shelter. It's called "economic slavery" as opposed to physical slavery, far less expensive, lol.

Give us this nada our daily nada...

How about 'don't litter where you live', lol?

But keep the screeds coming, you're quite amusing!

How is it that a Neo Liberalist with such an anti capitalist view resides in what would arguably be one of the sections of town where most people sit on the higher end of the socio-economic ladder? I respect your viewpoints, and the statements you made in subsequent posts, but when I saw in your user profile what section of town you listed, I was kind of thrown. Granted, I know nothing about you and your economic standing, so I don't want to make any wrongful assumptions - for all I know you could be sharing an apartment with 4 other people. But my points in this all is this - number one, to embrace an ideology such as the one you profess it seems kind of ironic to me that you would choose to settle in a part of a city which has what I believe has been identified has the 8th highest rent rate in the country. If we are indeed slaves to an economic system - which I am not arguing we aren't - why choose to have to work all the more harder and give up more to live in said location. Once again, I am not judging here, just trying to understand your statements in the context of the big picture here - and as I said I know nothing about you so my comments be out of place.

As to my second point - I live on the West Side near Lincoln Park, we have been there for about a year and a half now after living downtown for almost 5 years (rented there, bought where I am now). The first thing I noticed when I got there was how much more dirty it was, and I have taken it upon myself to be the "custodian" of my street and a lot of Duncan Avenue. Those pics of the park are nothing compared to what I see and have to deal with on a DAILY BASIS. Although I am not a cheerleader for any of the -ism's, but I am not going to blame any of them for the litter I see on a daily basis. If I got into the "this begets this" argument, I'd be talking for days and pouring over "if this-then this" arguments and scenarios ad nauseum. It all boils down to simple personal accountability and respect - for oneself, others and in this regard, your neighborhood and the world itself.

Perhaps we should send every American to Wind River, Wyoming

http://www.scientificamerican.com/art ... rican-consumption-habits/

It is well known that Americans consume far more natural resources and live much less sustainably than people from any other large country of the world. ?A child born in the United States will create thirteen times as much ecological damage over the course of his or her lifetime than a child born in Brazil,? reports the Sierra Club?s Dave Tilford, adding that the average American will drain as many resources as 35 natives of India and consume 53 times more goods and services than someone from China.

Tilford cites a litany of sobering statistics showing just how profligate Americans have been in using and abusing natural resources. For example, between 1900 and 1989 U.S. population tripled while its use of raw materials grew by a factor of 17. ?With less than 5 percent of world population, the U.S. uses one-third of the world?s paper, a quarter of the world?s oil, 23 percent of the coal, 27 percent of the aluminum, and 19 percent of the copper,? he reports. ?Our per capita use of energy, metals, minerals, forest products, fish, grains, meat, and even fresh water dwarfs that of people living in the developing world.?

He adds that the U.S. ranks highest in most consumer categories by a considerable margin, even among industrial nations. To wit, American fossil fuel consumption is double that of the average resident of Great Britain and two and a half times that of the average Japanese. Meanwhile, Americans account for only five percent of the world?s population but create half of the globe?s solid waste.

Americans? love of the private automobile constitutes a large part of their poor ranking. The National Geographic Society?s annual Greendex analysis of global consumption habits finds that Americans are least likely of all people to use public transportation?only seven percent make use of transit options for daily commuting. Likewise, only one in three Americans walks or bikes to their destinations, as opposed to three-quarters of Chinese. While China is becoming the world?s leader in total consumption of some commodities (coal, copper, etc.), the U.S. remains the per capita consumption leader for most resources.

Having seen the pictures in the article, I guess everyone is used to DTJC - or, at least, Exchange Place, looking immaculate! I was really expecting to see worse when I saw the photos.

Palisade Avenue and Franklin Street, in the Heights, looks like this 365 days a year...

Related(or not?) issue...(let me know if this has been addressed elsewhere on JClist?)

Has anyone wondered why Grundy Park (the boardwalk) next to Exchange Place has absolutely no lights functioning at night? Plenty of light poles but none working?

I've been having to pick a few bits of crap up from my sidewalk on Erie since the pedestrianization. Except for stuff dropped by sani guys, this hasn't been necessary for 10+ years. At least no throwaway diapers or broken glass like the good old days. I still find DTJC remarkably clean for such a densely populated area, but would like to see a restart of the checking of litter baskets for personal garbage.

Question: Why are so many cigarette boxes Newports? Are these the current Hipster brand?

A lot of that litter seems to be stuff that was blown around from the overflowing garbage cans. We have the same problem in Hamilton Park. Are there cultures which are more prone to littering? I think it's more about the economic class status and alcohol use than anything else. Then again have you ever been to a Giants game and seen the complete dump that the parking lots become afterwards?

Has anyone also noticed that for the past month or so there's been a trail of crap along the boardwalk starting from Taphaus all the way to Avalon Cove. It's like a sea monster rose up from the Hudson, took a dump all over the edge of the boardwalk, and then vanished. Who would be responsible for cleaning that? Avalon Cove or the city? You'd never see this kind of trash along Battery Park.

You can think that, but you would be wrong. If the littering was only being done by the people "from the other side of the highway" how do you explain the litter all over DTJC?? The truth is that people in JC are REALLY bad about littering and disposing of trash properly. I don't buy the argument that this is a direct result of trashcans being removed by the city, but I do agree that policy is not helping matters. I've witnessed people drop papers, bottles, etc on sidewalks rather than hold on to it for a few blocks to dispose of it in the proper manner. It's a total shame.

Add to the litterers the insistence of some people to not pick up after their dogs, and you can see how and why we have such dirty streets at times.

But, the city really should be adding more trashcans to the street corners. The policy of removing damaged trash bins and not replacing them is pure silliness. The few trashcans you find downtown are often overfilled.

This is just disgusting. You'd think the incinerator authority would've been all over this, preemptively.

An absolute disgrace, complete disregard for the environment and total absence of political leadership. Jersey City is one of the dirtiest places I have ever lived. The other day, I noticed that the sidewalk trash cans on Brunswick and 1st have been removed, same for Brunswick and 2nd.

I believe there is an anti-litter advocacy group or campaign called "stop the drop" but apparently, its voice has fallen on deaf ears.

JERSEY CITY - There's red, white and blue litter blowing in the wind at Exchange Place.

Thousands of people migrated to the Jersey City waterfront yesterday to catch the fireworks show at Liberty State Park and elsewhere. And there are signs of them everywhere.

Exchange Place this afternoon actually smells. There's pizza boxes with pigeons feasting on what's left in the containers. There are empty booze bottles, soda cans, and ice cream containers rolling around on the ground. The garbage bins are overflowing.
