WHY?

Our military looks forward to these events for many reasons. In an indirect way, they help with recruiting efforts by getting a chance to showcase some of their finest units directly to the public. Perhaps more importantly, it also serves the purpose of bringing the military and public at large closer together, which is an important aspect of our democratic principles. When I was in the Navy, getting to participate in Fleet Week was a coveted assignment. It's the same with airshows, certain parades, etc. Accidents are few, and fatal ones even rarer.

I was out on the water on Sat. The police presence and boat traffic made conditions pretty hectic. It seems to me that there was way too many things going on simaltaniously. If you say this is an important recruiting tool and it's participants look forward to this day I guess it's worth it then.

These types of accidents occasionally occur in training... this a very simple jump that went horribly wrong.

From media descriptions it sounds like the SEAL was thinking clearly and decided to free himself from his chute and take his chances with a water landing.

RIP. Salute to all the men and women who have served our country on this Memorial Day.

R.I.P. - not an easy task to hold the title Navy SEAL and shame he went out doing an exhibition parachute jump.

US Navy SEAL dies in parachuting accident during Fleet Week event in Jersey City

POSTED 3:44 PM, MAY 28, 2017, BY ASHLEY SOLEY-CERRO, UPDATED AT 04:29PM, MAY 28, 2017

JERSEY CITY, N.J. ?A US Navy SEAL died in a parachuting incident Sunday after his parachute failed to open, causing him to fall into the Hudson River, officials said.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident at a Fleet Week event in Jersey City. The man?s parachute failed to open properly, he fell into the Hudson River and later died at the Jersey City Medical Center.

Palisades Interstate Parkway police are assisting New Jersey State police in a ?parachute incident? at Liberty State Park, local police tweeted around 1 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard also confirms they have taken part in a rescue operation in the vicinity of the Hudson River.

The incident involved U.S. Navy personnel and occurred at a Fleet Week event, military sources say.

The Navy is aware of the incident, a spokesman said.

An image of the scene shared on social media shows a parachute in a parking lot. The photographer says several emergency vehicles responded.

The chute landed in the parking lot when a parachutist realized it would not open, and detached it so he would land in the Hudson River, NJ.com reports.

The parachutist, who was participating in a Fleet Week show, was recovered from the river and is in unknown condition, NJ.com reports.

Parachute fails to open during Fleet Week show off Jersey City

Updated on May 28, 2017 at 3:37 PM Posted on May 28, 2017 at 1:04 PM

BY MARGARET SCHMIDT mschmidt@jjournal.com
The Jersey Journal
A parachutist has been taken to the Jersey City Medical Center after his chute failed to open and he plunged into the Hudson River during a Fleet Week show on the Jersey City waterfront, according to a witness at the scene.

Freelance photographer Joe Shine said the parachutist apparently realized he was in trouble and detached the chute so he would land in the Hudson River.

The parachute landed in the parking lot for 30 Hudson St., which is across the street from the Liberty Towers, 35 Morris St., and is being photographed by Jersey City police officers, Shine said.

Kites, parachutes, Coast Guard demos: Liberty State Park is place to be

Liberty State Park in Jersey City will be packed with events over Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Sky Art Kite Festival will be taking place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days along the waterfront, south of the large playground. Hosted by a traveling kite show known as the Wind Wolves, this event is meant to introduce professional kite flying to the community.

There will be performances with the kites from professionals like Tony Jetland, the kite team known as Rev Riders, Gary Engvall, Lisa Willoughby and other performances from members of the Wind Wolves.

Along with the professional performances, there will also be a kite ballet competition, a kite painting challenge and the McGyver kite challenge. People can also purchase their own kites during the event.

While the Sky Art Kite Festival is happening on Sunday, a portion of Fleet Week will be taking place from noon to 5 p.m. near the Terminal. Fleet Week New York is an event to show support for the sea services while also letting people meet sailors, marines and coast guardsmen.

In honor of Fleet Week, the U.S. seas services will also host various aviation displays, with one of them taking place at Liberty State Park.
