In NYC medium and low end bikes are sold to restaurants. I have no idea what they do in JC. Maybe sell them across the river or on the corner?

Bike thief caught red-handed in Jersey City, cops say

John Pachecho, 52, was arrested Thursday in Jersey City.

When police caught an alleged bike thief red-handed in Jersey City Thursday, there was no foot pursuit, struggle or dramatic confrontation.

Instead, police say, the man simply said: "You got me."

Understood, a U-lock for a bike would be better served on a metered post.

There was a sketchy dude sitting on the bike rack at Shoprite, in the way as I was trying to lock up. I politely mentioned to him that if he wanted to be above suspicion of bike theft he shouldn't hang around people's bikes. As you can imagine, I got the predictable response.

I saw this coming right after the word sketchy. You should have kept your mouth shut, luckily you only got a scolding.

At Jsq the city has been marking bikes for removal from the bike rackss at the path station. I don't know how many zip ties your bike gets before its removed but there were multiple rusty bikes with 5 or 6 zip ties the other day. It is astounding how many people abandon their bikes.

I don't think this is correct, aren't you responsible for the bike from the time you check it out until it is checked back into the dock? If it is stolen or damaged I think you are on the hook for $1,200.

Check the terms and conditions.

Robin.

I ride a $1200 bike around Jersey City all the time. I leave it parked all over the city, and I don't even carry a lock. It's guaranteed to never ever get stolen. Even if it somehow does, its not my problem! If it starts raining for one leg of my trip, I just take a bus or a Lyft/Uber and I never worry about leaving it parked. In fact, I don't even bother to pick it up, because I have 500 of these bikes scattered around the city, just sitting there waiting for me to ride them. If I go into NYC, there are literally thousands more available to me with the swipe of a keyfob. I never have to lift a finger to pay a dime to maintain them.

For this service, I pay about 40 cents per day.

If you haven't guessed already, I'm referring to Citibike.

There are plenty of reasons and use cases to use your own, personal bike. But for commuting and general transportation purposes, nothing really beats the Citibike experience and the value you get for your membership fee is incredible.

Some complain that they are too heavy, slow, etc. But the real reason they are like that is actually for safety and comfort. Try it, you'll get used to it and learn to appreciate a less aggressive, more comfortable, more weather accomodating, and safer way of riding.

My bike was $80 from Walmart (have to say-the thing rode great) and the lock cost more than the bike itself...still stolen!

I don't think you can clip a high-end hardened steel D-lock like the Kryptonite in Brewster's picture with bolt-cutters, not with 3' ones, perhaps with 6' cutters you could (6' bolt-cutters will snip most chains too!)

On You-Tube there are videos of cropping low-end Kryptonite locks, and even then, watch the struggle they usually have.

I think Brewster's photo has been cut with an angle-grinder or hacksaw, look how smooth the cut is, when something is cropped it will have the depression indents where the jaws bit, and be more uneven.

If someone can find evidence of a hardened D-lock being cropped I'll stand corrected, but I have not seen or heard anything first hand.

Regardless, a fancy bike is a target.
A cheap lock is a target.
Quick-release wheels or seats are targets.

Lock it or lose it. And even a spokesman for Kryptonite admitted that there are multiple brute-force methods that work relatively quickly. Read the article in the link above if you want the details-

THIS. The U-Locks are useless for a thief that knows what they are doing. Heck, some people are still using the old U-Locks that could be pried open with a pen cap. :o

But, the chains with hexagonal links are definitely much harder to clip, which is why thieves will not bother and instead move on to the easier target of improperly locked bikes. I just came back from a quick visit to Grove Street Bikes and walked past the various bike racks in the plaza, and so many of those bikes are locked with simple cable locks... I am surprised those haven't been swiped by now.

I spent the extra on the Kryptonite NY Lock. I believe it came with an theft insurance plan. Also go the seat/wheel locks.

I am shocked someone was able to cut through the lock in the photo. Even making that cut, still have to be pretty strong to slip it off the frame etc.

I have not had an issue, but you never get the thought out of your head about your bike disappearing.

But, that's my point Brewster: the u-locks are generally useless. The Kryptonite New York series chains are completely different and much harder to cut. Any thief will go for any other of the many bikes available for stealing rather than mess around with those chunky, hexagonal links.

Nor, as iGreg pointed out, the nicest/shiniest/most-expensive bike on the block.

I've used those NY chains for many years on both bikes and mopeds and never had an issue. I just shake my head at all the "decent" bikes at Grove St PATH with el-cheapo sub-$20 locks that are basically worthless...

What specific type and model? I have left my bike unattended (for days at a time, in some instances) all over NYC and JC and never had any issues when using a New York chain. Ultimately, there are no guarantees, but if you make your bike harder to steal than others in the area, you are ahead of the game. It's like the joke about evading zombies: you don't need to be the fastest, you just don't want to be the slowest one. You need not be theft-proof, you just need to not be the easiest one to steal.

Here is the skinny, you want a commuter bike to actually lock up?
Better get a real low end beater w/ shitty components that will garner no more than a $10 or $20 resale.

Anything nice will get stolen and CitiBike comes in handy at that point - even though CitiBikes suck ballz when needed and you find the stations are either empty or full.
