Marie J. Tauro was suddenly and tragically taken from us on Sunday, April 2, 2017. Daughter of Antonio and Rose Tauro (nee LaBruno), Marie was born and raised in Jersey City.

Marie was the proud mother of Michael DenBleyker and Dr. Leonard DenBleyker, and the sister of Gabriel, Nicholas, Anthony and Paul Tauro. Loving grandmother to Michael Christopher, Nicole Linn and Margaret Rose DenBleyker. Mother-in-law to Michelle DenBleyker and Dr Janice Prontnicki-DenBleyker.

Marie owned and operated Topps Wines and Liquors in Union City for many years. She was a political force, ally and adversary. She was active in Senior Services and current commissioner on the Municipal Utilities Authority of Jersey City.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 7, 2017, 4:00pm to 9:00pm at RIOTTO FUNERAL HOME & Cremation Company, 3205 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ 07306. Cremation will be private.

+1 Mao's comments. This is really sad news. I knew Marie personally and worked with her for years. She possessed great energy and enthusiasm for life and took pride in her physical health spending many days at the gym or nearby university pool. Never at a loss to share what is on her mind and always looking out for others. She enjoyed traveling - spending much time in the south-west USA. Political views, she was a die-hard Republican, but would help and work for those even of a different party, like our current democratic mayor, if she believed they were a good person and a good leader. She is survived by her son (and grandkids), whom she was so proud of being a very enterprising small business owner in Texas.

The only thing that shocks me is the information that Marie was 80! She had an incredible amount of energy, drive, enthusiasm and optimism. I would have guessed that she was a youthful 70. Requiscat in pace!

Russell was about the nicest guy you could ever meet. He always kept his cool when everyone else was losing it. Lux pertua luceat eum!

NORTH BERGEN -- Authorities identified the Hudson County corrections officer who has been charged in the hit-and-run crash Sunday night that killed two well know political leaders as a 38-year-old North Bergen resident.

Michael Hansen was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Russell Maffei, age 57, and Marie Tauro, age 80, both of Jersey City, were struck and killed as they crossed the street near Coach House Diner on Kennedy Boulevard at 8:05 p.m., Suarez said.

NORTH BERGEN -- A Hudson County corrections officer has been arrested following a hit-and-run crash that killed two pedestrians in North Bergen on Sunday night, officials said.

The corrections officer has not been identified nor has a time and date been set for a first court appearance. The arrest was made at about 4 a.m. by the North Bergen police and the Hudson County Sheriff's Office, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

Just for clarification, the individuals were crossing Paterson Plank Road when they were hit.

I knew both people, so sorry for their loss. Kennedy Blvd has become very dangerous when the county disbanned the Hudson County Police. It happened due to politics. When tickets were written, the money went to the municipality where the offense happened. So JC received a great deal of money from the county on tickets. Then former Mayor Schundler criticized the County budget, then county executive, Bobby, disbanned the County Police. His budget paid for the county police, so why enriched JC? After that, accidents increased on County roads, especially Tonnelle Avenue and Kennedy Blvd.

Jersey City is mourning the deaths of Russell Maffei and Marie Tauro, two longtime fixtures on the local political scene who were killed in North Bergen last night.

Maffei, the chair of the Jersey City Republican Party, and Tauro were struck and killed as they walked across the street outside the Coach House diner at about 8 p.m Sunday, friends of the two told The Jersey Journal. The driver of the SUV that struck the two fled the scene, according to media reports.
