Fulop drops out of 2017 race endorses longtime foe Bill Matsikoudis?.

In a stunning presser this morning on the steps of City Hall Mayor Steven Fulop announced he will not seek a second term as the Mayor of Jersey City. As incredible as that news was he continued with a much more troubling announcement. He is throwing his full support behind his longtime rival Bill Matsikoudis to insure that he becomes the next Mayor of Jersey City.

The short notice of the press release and the live announcement itself caught JC?s political world by surprise. The Jersey Journal?s Political Insider Agustin Torres and reporter Terrence McDonald were speechless for once. Terrence was fanatically trying to get in touch with Matsikoudis for a quote to put into his JJ column. Stating that he has to keep his record up of having a Matsikoudis quote (or picture) in every Jersey City political piece he does. Political Insider Agustin Torres is heart sick considering his piece on how Fulop is a shoe in for Mayor is in today?s Jersey Journal print edition. Bad timing or a nice parting shot directed towards Augie from Mayor Fulop? You decide. (I?ll go with the latter)

Details behind the bizarre announcement are forthcoming but a few insiders (a favorite source for the Jersey Journal) have said that it all stemmed from last week?s meeting between Mayor Fulop and Councilman Boggiano. Mayor Fulop is said to have asked old-time Jersey City resident and Ward C Councilman Boggiano if he should seek a second term. As any Ward C constituent will tell you Rich Boggiano is the go to person for advice current or future, that he is also known as the Zoltar of Jersey City. (he sees the future of a Journal Square with no building over 4 stories and construction workers using hammers with silencers attached) Well Mayor Fulop asked and oddly enough Boggiano pulled out a card from his desk and answered a flat out ?NO!? Not wanting to advance his age 20 years ala Tom Hanks and knowing that the NYC FAO Schwarz is now closed (would have been fun to jump around that giant keyboard) Mayor Fulop accepted the answer and was off to prepare todays withdrawal announcement. After Fulop left Boggiano?s office a few faint laughs could be heard coming from the back room. It was none other than Councilman Yun with a few bundles of ?NO!? cards next to a massive pile of ripped in two ?YES!? cards. Seems he picked up the ?NO!? cards cheap at a Montvale NJ yard sale. (a new No-bbie Brothers tune was playing in the back ground)

In related news there is a report of a suicidal man perched high on the Wittpenn Bridge. He is said to be holding a banner with the cryptic words of.. ??If the Healy clone becomes mayor Sound Machine will jump?. Observers who stopped their cars to take a look were intrigued by the message. (most cars were stopped in place for 10 minutes already because of the daily nightmare traffic jams in the area) A few yelled to the rather large person to stop and come down. Saying 4 years of Matsikoudis cannot in anyway be as bad as the 9 years of Healy even though Matsikoudis was Healy?s right-hand man during his tenure as Mayor. But some in the crowd yelled out for the man to jump. Calling out that the man was nothing more than a Fulop bootlicker toady boy and should end it all. One in the crowd kept yelling out ?Just Do it Bruce? JUMP?. A very disturbing situation indeed. The JCPD said he was requesting a meeting or phone call from the Mayor himself. Sources say the Mayor and his wife are in a remote part of Pennsylvania competing in a Tough Mudder obstacle course and couldn?t (or didn't want to) be reached regarding the jumper. That could spell trouble for the guy on the bridge. (and the poor fish when he hits the water)

More to come?..

Here is the follow-up to today?s news item. (hey Jersey Journal people love to read follow-up stories... please take the hint)

Well for the few who wanted to see the big man jump I have some news for you. He almost did but as we all know almost only counts in horse shoes, hand grenades, and recent Presidential elections. As the jumper was getting the news from the JCPD that Mayor Fulop was not going to trek back to JC to talk him off of the bridge a commotion erupted over by the Mana Contemporary on Newark Avenue. Could it be some kind of new art installation? Yet another naked sculpture of The Donald or a President Joker billboard? By standers turned their attention away from the jumper and towards the noise coming from up the hill. The Circle beggars were even abandoning their cherished posts which they hold on to in all types of weather to see what was happening up Newark Avenue. Some held those spots for a decade. The guy in the cardboard tent even came out for a looksee.

The action seemed to being moving closer to the Wittpenn Bridge.. what could it be? Drivers were now stopping their cars and jumping out with their cell phones prepped for pictures. As the jumper looked to his left he could see in the distance a figure coming down the street. Could it be? After all of these years gone has he resurfaced to make some kind of statement on the day Mayor Fulop dropped out of the mayoral race. The crowd furthest from the bridge started to applaud as they followed the figure down to the bridge. The jumper thought he was hearing things but it was true (is this real life he said to himself) the words of that old Irish classic O Danny Boy were wafting in the air reaching his high perch.

Well the sweet lyrics were coming out of the mouth of ex Mayor Healy of all people. He was dining at his favorite Indian restaurant in Indian Square entertaining the lunchtime crowd with his singing. A side job he picked up to make a little extra money after losing to Mayor Fulop in 2013. An incoming patron announced that there was a jumper on the bridge holding a sign with the word Healy on it. He threw down his overly salted Masala Dosa (Healy never met a salt shaker he didn?t like) and headed outside while continuing his tune.

Strolling past the many Dosa Huts and Jewelry Stores he thought to himself how that stretch of Newark Avenue used to be lined with Butchers, a Bakery, two Hardware Stores, Candy Stores, Drug Stores, Soda Fountains, a Barber Shop, Hairdresser, Electronic Shops, Liquor Stores, Diner?s, Karp?s Department Store, a Bowling Alley, a Rag Shop, the ?numbers? collecting old lady, and even a Magic Shop. But what hurt the most (which also hurts this writer? oh the Bar-manity ) is the missing old man taverns. There were maybe 5 or 6 from the Blvd down to Tonnele Avenue to accommodate the many area factory workers at quitting time. (or during lunchtime hmmm now you know why some (American) cans got dented) As he walked past the jewel of them all Joey Starr?s he shed a tear for it since it is now long gone and has been replaced by a shiny new condo building. Crying over spilled beer?YES! (we all are)

The ex-Mayor?s throaty rendition of O Danny Boy was oddly comforting to the jumpers ears. Was it enough to bring him down from the bridge? Has Healy found another side job as the Pied Piper of jumpers? Has a blanket of regret over taken SM for all of those anti-Healy posts during the 2013 election and beyond? Will SM actually vote for Matsikoudis now that Mayor Fulop dropped out of the race?

No... he decided to jump by the time I finished this piece.

PS ? the fish are fine and Healy smiled when he heard the loud plop.
