Teen shot on Sunday arrested, charged with robbery
By Caitlin Mota | The Jersey Journal
on March 28, 2017 at 3:28 PM

JERSEY CITY -- Three teenagers, including one who was shot early Sunday morning on Ocean Avenue, have been arrested and charged with robbery, authorities said.

Authorities say the 16-year-old who was shot in the ankle robbed a 15-year-old boy of a gold chain at the Martin Luther King Drive light rail station station at about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

Officials previously said the shooting victim was 15.

YES. If it keeps them from GETTING SHOT. Although if nothing happened to them the previous 20 times they were out at 3am maybe the odds are with them, who knows?

Yes, throw the kids in foster care, I'm sure that will do wonders for their development. -____-

YES. If no suitable relative is available. THEY GOT SHOT. You could argue that the prior 10 or 20 times they were out at 3 am nothing too terrible happened but that's not a great argument. THEY GOT SHOT. Any living scenario that doesn't involve getting shot is pretty much an uptick. And by the way, foster care isn't always a horror.
Yes because it was obviously going so well.

And foster care is the solution?

YES in case I wasn't clear, it is one possible solution.
I am guessing you are one of the parents.

The reality is curfew is just a feel good law it doesn't actually work. It would tie up way too many resources if it was enforced the way most people would like that are for it.

You could make that argument for almost every law on the books that deals with petty crime, or other QoL crimes. And, yet, that's part of living in a civilized society.

What are the resources necessary to enforce the law? As it is written, a cop that sees a minor out at night in violation of the curfew is supposed to pick up said minor and drop him off at the curfew center. I fail to see how that's "too many resources". What are we supposed to do then? Throw up our collective arms and turn a blind eye to crimes unless they are serious enough?

Well first it requires cops to question all suspected minors to find out their age, why they are outside and where they live. Because all most of the kids have to say is this is my building or my neighbors building and they aren't in violation. They can also hang out with an 18 year old friend or family member and they are also exempt. Then you have the kids which are going to lie and say they are older or the older teens that really are old enough but don't have ID.

The kids that are truthful or known to police as underage after being questioned now have to be driven to Cator Ave (unless that was changed). While all this is taking place that means the police can not respond to real crime like shootings, robberies, assaults etc. So now you are taking police away from responding to calls of real crimes in progress and playing baby sitter.

Now here is the part of that law that for some reason doesn't show up on the link you posted unless that was changed but I have a feeling it is in the letters D through F are listed as "reserved" in the exceptions section. A teen isn't violating curfew if it isn't a school night. So technically these kids aren't breaking curfew since school isn't in session on Sunday.

Remember also it isn't as hard as you think to get the fines waved if someone is too poor to pay. So now you just wasted time making police question everyone that LOOKS 16 or younger and they have to be driven to Cator Ave no matter what part of the city the child was found. Another officer has to make sure the child and parent is counseled after waiting how ever long it takes for them to show up at the location. Then the parent/guardian has to see a judge and can simply ask to get any fine waved if they can't afford to pay it. If the center is full a kid can just lie and give a fake school, name and address since that means the kid is just sent home.

So tell me how exactly does this law help? Keep in mind juveniles are statistically more likely to commit a crime or be a victim of crime earlier in the day.

Well it looks like a price has been paid due to negligence.

13 and 15 years of age at 3:00am - I'm betting they were upto no good and got an ass whipping, since the shots were directed at their ankles and at their back (escaping from doing something they shouldn't have) !

Whatever it was, shooting them was an extreme ... next-time a paint/pellet gun would have been a better option and just as painful !

It would be nice if the newspaper followed up with what they were up to in that area or will the kids remain quiet so as not to incriminate themselves ... I'm not buying any cock & bull story that they were out at 3.00am walking their dog!

Teens, ages 13 and 15, shot early Sunday morning in Jersey City

By Caitlin Mota | The Jersey Journal
on March 26, 2017 at 8:52 AM, updated March 26, 2017 at 9:02 AM

JERSEY CITY -- A 13-year-old is in critical condition and a second teen was injured in a shooting early Sunday morning on Ocean Avenue, officials said.

Both boys were shot near Wegman Parkway just before 3 a.m., city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

A 15-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his ankle and his injuries are not considered life threatening. The 13-year-old suffered a "more serious" injury to his back, Morrill said.

The teens are being treated at Jersey City Medical Center and no arrests have been made.

Child Protective Services has been notified, Morrill said.
