I've never heard of the brand "Roadmaster" and looked it up, probably one of the cheapest "new" bikes you can buy. My guess would be that the thief was desperate and would have stolen ANYTHING ? not knowing that particular bike isn't even worth the risk.

Value is in the eye of the beholder, and in this case, the owner of the bike. To many, $79 is a heck of a lot of money to be stolen away from you. To a thief or a druggie, it's just the next fix, or the means of getting from point a to b. Not a lecture, mind you, just an observation. Victims are so rarely considered with anything more than a shrug.

There's a helluva selection that would be a big draw to a thief.
People should note that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and act accordingly.
Get something cheap that doesn't attract attention and doesn't hurt to lose.

A Jersey City man with an extensive criminal record was charged with trying to steal a bicycle at the Journal Square PATH station yesterday morning, authorities said.

...When Fields was arrested, he admitted that he did not own the Roadmaster bicycle, said Pentangelo, who noted that there has been a recent spike in bicycle thefts at the PATH station.
