Honestly by that age you ought to consider a more complete overhaul. The stock capacitors have likely leaked through the dielectric. I would upgrade the caps, replace the pair of tweeters and refoam the drivers as needed.

Nice speakers and I'm also partial to domed tweeters (my mains are ADS L710s + a bi-amped powered sub with an active crossover). Pretty sure your tweeters were made in 3 versions. Each version a bit more efficient than the prior version, so matching gets pretty important and that's why I brought up the subject.

These prices look pretty nuts but it's a start:

Definitely a DIY job. The last thing you want to do is ship or schlep that baby...

Edit: Just did some homework and it's now 5 versions of that tweeter. Normally sold in matched (tested) pairs. More info:

Speakers are Fried Studio IV from early 80s and they have Hiquphon tweeters. The company still makes Fried replacements and I may have to go that route.

In 3 Stooges fashion I bobbled the tweeter and it fell about a foot and hit the driver frame. It hasn't been happy since...

Does anyone know of a speaker repair shop that can deal with early 80s Fried speakers that have soldered connections? I managed to damage one tweeter and need some help...

More details on the tweeter? If the cone or dome is shot then you'd honestly be better off replacing both tweeters in the speaker pair because finding an exact replacement for one is pretty unlikely. Nice speakers. Maybe I can help you too? I realize we're switching topics mid-thread but audiophiles are chill

Not sure what you need but seems lime the folks at fixmydual.com could probably help. If you are intent in keeping it consider replacing the mediocre arm.

RATS! He was brilliant at doing a variety of computer circuit board repairs I needed. I'm so depressed right now I might as well go watch football...

Mess, I probably sold several hundred of those 701s. One of the first direct-drive units and they were really quiet. The arms were so-so IMO, but it was still a solid table for a fraction of the price of a Thorens with a granite base and an SME tonearm. I'm definitely a DIY-type and I can offer to help see if it can be made right. I probably have the necessary small tools. Parts? Fugedaboutit-

Thanks for the response. It's the 701, a rare model - https://www.vinylengine.com/library/dual/701.shtml.

My cats went bonkers one day and knocked it onto the floor. My heart sank. The only thing noticeable is that the tonearm needs adjustment. I tried doing that but still can't get the tonearm to sit properly on records. It probably needs a thorough tune up after getting knocked over. I am far from mechanically inclined and wouldn't think of messing with it.

Of all the gear I own, the turntable is probably my most cherished piece. Do you think I can trust Danilo with it? If it needs any parts though, I'm probably out of luck.

I used to retail audio gear back in the 1970s, including a ton of Dual turntables. I'll try to help you out here-

Gimme the specific model #. Then describe the problem a bit. Like maybe it's a belt-drive platter and you just need a new belt? That's about $8 and 10 minutes with a screwdriver for a DIY repair. Shoot back here or take it to p.m.

The only good shop I know of in DTJC is Danillo (sp?) Electronics on Newark Ave., North Side, just a hair West of Monmouth. Owner speaks almost no English but he's really good and inexpensive. Bring a Spanish-speaking friend if you don't-

I have a refurbished 1970'ish top of the line Dual turntable in need of repair. It's irreplaceable to me and I have no desire to junk it for something new. Is there a reputable place in the area? I don't want to lug it to and from NYC. I don't have a car but can take Uber or use zipcar.
