Crime by the numbers
Fulop says most types have decreased; talks about problems and solutions

by Al Sullivan - Reporter staff writer  Jan 08, 2017

Progress in reducing crime in Jersey City has been steady over the last three years, said Mayor Steven Fulop last week, although there are still problem areas to be addressed. Jersey City has seen a spike in some categories such as violent crime, and this year saw an increase in domestic violence incidents. Other categories have remained flat over the past year.

Police records show that there were 1,073 incidents of assault in 2016, close to the previous year’s 1,071 incidents.

Jersey City 2016 crime stats: what's up, what's down, and what they're doing about it

JERSEY CITY -- Crime statistics in 2016 remained relatively stable compared to 2015 and city officials say they are now working to tackle what they consider to be their "hardest problems."

In a meeting with The Jersey Journal, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and Public Safety Director Jim Shea provided the Uniform Crime Statistics that showed while homicides, sexual assaults, and auto thefts were down, nonfatal shootings and burglaries rose last year.

"The last year, our focus was what it's been since the beginning: addressing all of our crime out of citizens' concern with a special focus on violence," Shea said.
