I totally agree with you. The ferry system needs to be subsidized by the state to alleviate the overcrowding on PATH. PATH also needs to be taken over by NJ Transit and subsidized as well. The PA has no interest in future developments that will make any difference to the overcrowding. They should have been working on something 10-15 years ago. So we have one solution in the meantime and that is to take advantage of our waterways.

I know New York is expanding their ferry service, and the cost will be the same as a single ride MTA swipe of a metro card. It's too bad New Jersey can't figure out something along those lines. I think more people would take the ferry if it didn't cost $6/$7 a ride from Jersey City.

The article fails to address one important question: Are they going to shut down one of the WTC tunnels on weekends AT THE SAME TIME AS the shutdown of the 33rd Street Line? If they do, it's going to be a total clusterf*ck on weekends.

I doubt the post-flood remediation work could have waited until the signal-replacement job was ready for construction.

I'm no engineer, but why bother to close both downtown tunnels on weekends for the entirety of 2014 in order to just wash off salt as a temporary measure? If the infrastructure was going to have to be permanently replaced, why didn't they just bite the bullet and replace it back then?

This is so damn typical of the PA. Piss $50 million up the wall on a temporary patch that closes the tunnels for a year, only to come back two years later to spend another $400 million to do the real repair work and disrupt the service for another year. This apparent incompetence/indifference is SO infuriating!

If nothing else, these unending weekend PATH closures will likely slow down the tide of NYC refugees washing up in DTJC only to push up those constitutionally-protected cheap rents and steal those God-given on-street parking spots....

So true. I think this is just emblematic of how the PA goes about their business: instead of trying to figure out a way to do all of this at once, carefully spending taxpayer money, they choose something that is both wasteful and incredibly disrupting to a lot of people. Also agreed on the timeline estimates. Since experience tells us that the PA will not meet their own timelines, I think it is safe to assume that the work will take at least three years. Lucky for us, the work is only going to affect us on weekends. People in Williamsburg will be without a subway for over a year! :o

After speaking with my buddy at the Path, he said the reason why we see 7 car trains on the NWK-WTC line is because the normal train is having some sort of equipment failure. The standby trains are all 7-car so they can be used on all the lines for greatest flexibility.

For the past 4-6 weeks trains on the NWK-WTC line have been randomly showing up during both the morning and evening rush hour missing one or two cars.

The commuters spread themselves along the platform in anticipation of the usual 10-car service only to have an 8 or 9 car train pull in, causing a sudden stampede up the platform to cram themselves into the last car.

This has happened on my commute about a dozen times or so over the last month, with no apparent rhyme or reason to which trains come with a full complement of 10 cars and which come with only 8 or 9. it's very frustrating for those of us who board at the rear of the trains.

Anyone know why this is happening now? I've never encountered this on the WTC line in all the years I've been riding the PATH until this summer.

Final two platforms at WTC opened this morning. Egress was surprisingly smooth.

Similar to how the 33rd St platforms operate, right hand doors open up allowing passengers out onto an empty platform and then up dedicated exit stairs and escalators, so you don't have to contend with anyone coming down.

Early days, but it looks like the PA at least has managed to somewhat address the crowding getting down to and up from the PATH platforms.

A very tentative "good job, guys".

I'm not sure this counters my point, right? A lot of what you itemized is outside of the scope of the oculus itself, and would still be required, regardless of whether they built the Taj Mahal on the site, or just borrowed from the Waffle House design manual and erected a little shack.

I'll cop to lets say half the principal construction fees, Calatrava's fee, hlaf the admin, and all of the steel. Even so, that's like a 1.3bn dollars, and I think that's a generous estimate.
