Sneaker Room grand opening closes part of Central Avenue

By Nancy Benecki-Hawkins | The Jersey Journal
on May 07, 2016 at 5:20 PM

Suraj Kaufman's dream to open a sneaker store started with an unexpected yet thoughtful gift.

A few months after his mother died in 2006, Kaufman said he received one Nike brand stock in the mail. A posthumous note from his mom came with the stock and said it was the one thing from the brand he would never wear out.

Kaufman asked his father for a loan to open his first store on Brunswick Street, which was a resale store with only 300 square feet.

Today, Kaufman celebrated the opening of his new flagship Sneaker Room store, which moved to 410 Central Ave.

The SE corner of Franklin Street and Sherman Avenue, 3-story 19th/early 20th building. Ground floor has been a deli, a green-grocer, and most recently a salon. All went out of business pretty quickly, as there is very little foot traffic. Now they have removed the modern infill, and seem to be re-opening the original corner storefront - even restoring the cast iron columns!

Anyone have any tips?
