I don't remember but there may have been a Banana Republic there in the 1990's. I know there used to be an Eddie Bauer there that closed.

Will Jersey City's 'brawling Easter bunny' be vindicated?

By Michaelangelo Conte | The Jersey Journal
Follow on Twitter
on April 29, 2016 at 1:40 PM, updated April 29, 2016 at 3:17 PM

Charges against the Newport Centre Mall Easter bunny who was videotaped brawling with a parent a week before Easter will be heard in the Jersey City Municipal Court.

"We look forward to the bunny being vindicated," attorney James Lisa said today of his client, Kassim Charles, the 22-year-old Jersey City man who was initially charged with the criminal offense of aggravated assault a day after the March 20 incident.

On Wednesday, Lisa represented Charles at a hearing before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale, who downgraded the charge to the disorderly persons offense of simple assault and remanded the matter the Jersey City Municipal Court.

Nope. Roy Blount, Jr (I think?) was stumped.

I hate malls and shopping in general, and when I must I generally shop in Manhattan during the course of other errands rather than go to the Newport Mall. The mall was built to protect newport from the drug and crime riddled downtown back in the day, which is why the garage literally turns its back on Hamilton Park.

That said, the stores in the mall are exponentially better than they were even 10 years ago. I don't know if some people have forgotten what it was like or maybe weren't here back then. But, back then there were numerous stores that I would describe as "slutty clubbing clothes" stores. Now, they at least have brand-name clothing stores. Many of which I am not interested in, but they are higher end. And as for the theater, back in the day it, too, was nasty. Filthy, uncomfortable seats, and - for lack of a better way to say it - a clientele that didn't behave very well. As much as I hate the mall, I have to give them credit for improving over the years.

They aren't Short Hills, but I refuse to go to Short Hills because it's a pain getting there and it's pretentious.

Any mall will attract kids to hang out in it. It's a free place to spend time

Because it was built in the 80s to help anchor the development of Newport

This and it was designed to be a physical barrier between Newport and the hood that was DTJC

Better to let it be lousy place -- so that our Downtown storefront retail does better. Higher end malls now often get rid of their food courts -- and that helps solve these youth issues -- but again in our case it is better to let it just be terrible -- who living Downtown needs or wants a mall of any kind.

Not the same but similar, there is a Spencer Gifts on the second floor of the Newport Mall

There's also an east meet west or some other type of hippie store if you're looking for that end of the goofy novelty spectrum. Second floor towards Penny's.

Are there any statistics on how well that mall's actually doing? From what I see, it's mostly mid-range stores I can find in teh city or any other suburb. I can't imagine anybody from outside of JC driving to visit it. If people wanna go to a mall, they'll probably go out for a nicer experience at Short Hills.

Though the movie theater is nice...they can tear the rest down and keep that.

Seems like it's another generational thing that'll be obsolete in 10 years. The mall rats generation is long gone, nobody wants to be cooped up in these things anymore.

You think they steal all those boxes of Welch's fruit snacks?
Nah.
In any event, I'll put up with those kids everyday over the white girls from Michigan that hang out in parking lots trying to sell their boyfriend's hiphop cd that is "gonna be the next big thing"

Jersey City's infamous Easter Bunny may be spending the rest of Holy Week behind bars.

Police today announced they are filing charges against Newport Centre Mall's "Easter Bunny," Kassim Charles, and Juan Jimenez-Gerrero, whose brawl at the Downtown Jersey City mall yesterday afternoon, with Charles still half-dressed in his bunny costume, was documented on video.

This article says that the Easter Bunny's outstanding warrant was for "fare-hopping." Is that how he got the job to begin with?

Any people crying about Jersey City gentrification wiping out old JC want to comment?

All I have to say is that the Easter Bunny was "keepin' it real, yo." Also, thanks for the laugh.

It's funny. In my ignorance, when I first saw the headline I thought "Mall Bunny" must be a euphemism for something.
