When I was a kid on LI, they tried raising the tolls on the Southern State Pkwy from a dime to a quarter. So many people bitched and routed around on local roads that they got rid of the tolls entirely. The world revolved on.

But... shouldn't cars slow down and accelerate gradually when coming to and out of a toll booth??? There are speed monitors at the booths for a reason.......

Yeah, I think you right. With the advancements in cars, you can go 90 and not even notice. I used to have a Trans Am in the early 90's and that was a 5.7L V8 that went 0-60 in around 6 seconds. The Camry with a V6 can do it in the same time now. For the safety of everyone, auto manufacturers should make HUD's with the speed limit standard on all cars. Maybe a warning when you are going over the speed limit (user adjustable but defaulted to 10 or something) will help drivers be more aware.

I may be an old crank on this, but is there no connection between speeding and the ridiculously overpowered modern cars? I live in the middle of a 400 ft block between 2 stops, and cars are hitting 30+mph! People demand cars with double the HP that they used to have.
I read that a late model Rav4 will beat Magnum's Ferrari 0-60. My 1st minivan was a 1991 Caravan with 150 hp. I thought it was fine, drove it at 90mph across Montana when they had no speed limit. Next van was a 2001 Caravan, 180 hp. Now I have a 2010 Odyssey, 240 hp. But that's modest, you can get a Camry with 268hp! We once had an Escort Wagon we adored, 88hp. No, we didn't have to Flintstone it to get on a highway.

The true tragedy will be that he will probably get off lightly, and nothing will change. Tim was a classmate from Prep, though he did graduate a year ahead of me. He was a good guy, and I remember him being a really nice and jovial guy.
Old classmates of his own year are taking it very badly. He was very much loved among his closer friends.

Unfortunately, I drive every day to work and the number of crazy drivers that disregard speed limits or drive like an idiot scares me. Sorry to hear about this. The driver who caused the accident has finally learned a hard lesson that will haunt him forever.

Science Teacher, Daughter Identified as Victims in Deadly New Jersey Crash; Driver Arrested on Manslaughter Charges
By Brian Thompson Authorities have arrested a New Jersey man in a crash that killed a popular Jersey City science teacher and his 5-year-old daughter on a busy New Jersey highway Monday afternoon. Scott Hahn, 36, is charged with two counts of manslaughter and two counts of vehicular homicide in the deaths of Tim O'Donnell, a science teacher at County Prep High School, and his 5-year-old daughter Bridget, New Jersey state police said Tuesday. Hahn, of Hamilton, was processed at State Police Newark Station and jailed on $1 million bail, according to state police. absolute tragedy. My guess is the guy who rear-ended them was texting as he had to have been moving quickly to push the other car to the other side of the road.

I saw the accident after it happened and for the life of me could not figure out how that car had been going fast enough to end up in the magled condition that I saw it, and with barely bumper damage to a van that was against it. I did notice another car, much father back (toward the tolls) with front end damage. So, the speculation that the third car rear-ended the first car and caused it to go out-of-control makes sense. Also the specuation that it flipped is reasonable considering the condition I saw it in was certainly far worse than a mere collision. Tragic.

So sad, there's been conflicting reports on what happened. A witness said a mercedes hit the rear end/side of the victim's car that made it roll over and cross the cones onto eastbound traffic.

1010 WINS reported that they pulled a U-turn by the toll booths, if that makes sense. They must have been going very, very fast. There was a child seriously injured. Terrible.

A lot of cars and vans blow through the outside toll lanes at 40+mph. Head-on, that's 80+mph if the car rolled into the eastbound lane. Pot holes might have been a factor - that section can be cratered.

On my way home from work at about 4 I passed by a horrible accident on 78 west closeish to the Holland Tunnel. It looked like a convertible swerved out of its lane and hit a van...and there was a white sheet over the driver's side. Tons of police and fire trucks nearby. Any ideas what happened? I'm hoping the driver of the convertible is ok but it didn't look like it...
