Yes We Can! Name new school for Obama | Editorial

By Jersey Journal Editorial
on February 05, 2016 at 2:50 PM, updated February 05, 2016 at 2:53 PM

The Jersey Journal wholeheartedly endorses the idea brought forth this week by Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, D-Jersey City, to name the new School 20 on Ocean Avenue in honor of President Barack Obama.

Although we generally believe buildings should be named in memory rather than in honor of officials and leaders, this should be an exception.

As the first African-American president of the United States, Obama holds a special place in our nation's history. Further, he represents hope for children of all races that, to echo Obama's campaign slogan, yes, they, too, can achieve their dreams.

I agree that should be the rule but they named all sorts of shit for Reagan while he was alive. Named a carrier for GHWB.

It's still National Airport to me.

They want to name a school after a guy who endorsed Mayor Fulop's opponent in the mayoral race?

Looks like Angela McKnight took a page straight of of the socialist third world country's manual for a newly elected lawmaker.

This is the kind of thing they do a lot in places like India. Don't make any improvements, don't even bother proposing improvements because that would be to hard. As soon as your elected, propose renaming the airport, school or highway after one of your old clan leaders.

Jersey City school could be named after Barack Obama

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
February 02, 2016 at 3:56 PM

JERSEY CITY — A new state lawmaker wants to name a Greenville public elementary school after President Obama.

Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, D-Jersey City, said a constituent came to her with the idea, which McKnight said would offer a "positive inspiration" to the pre-K through five school's students.

"Wouldn't it be nice to have Barack Obama to come and actually see it, and the kids can actually meet him?" said McKnight, whose first term as an assemblywoman for the 31st Legislative District began last month.

McKnight receives full Jersey City Council support to rename P.S. 20 after Obama

Assemblywoman Angela McKnight (D-31) received full support of the Jersey City Council to rename Public School No. 20 after President Barack Obama (D).

“While in office, our president has done great work regarding education reform,” McKnight said during the public portion of Wednesday’s council meeting, also referencing the “Every Student Succeeds Act” Obama signed on December 10, 2015.

“(The act) prepares students success for college careers and more importantly guaranteed steps are taken to help students and their schools improve.”

Additionally, McKnight mentioned that Obama is the only president to propose that students can attend a two-year community college for free.
