St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City has officially started work on what will be a multi-million dollar addition to their already distinguished athletic program.

St. Peter's Prep held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday for its $5.25 million, 15,000-square-foot athletic facility next to the school's practice football field near Van Vorst Avenue in Jersey City.

The three-story William O. Perkins III '86 Athletic Center, will be located next to the James F. Keenan Field, one block southwest of the school's main campus at 144 Grand St.

Does anyone know if it'll have a pool inside? We really need a nice pool around downtown / paulus hook area that's open to public (even for a fee).

I know there's a pool at PS16, but that's really small, and I've heard many kids who got pink eye / ear infection from going there

The building is smaller than what Tan is allowed to build, and is set back from Grand, to the side of the field. It fits in with the sweep of the B&G Club and the JCMC. Tan's building is right across from the brownstones. This building will not be.

As for the property tax issue, I'm ambivalent. The school is a bona fide educational institution, and the buildings cited are part of operations, and not collected investment properties as happens with many colleges.

Ahh interesting so Tan just never did anything yet.

(from prep site)

I forgot that Prep doesn?t pay property taxes?they have a lot of properties.

Tan has the ability to go up to five stories. The comment is full of it. He wants to go up to seven on that narrow lot. The athletic center is also set back from Grand, and will not be prominent on the property.

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... wner_wears_down_city.html

"The City Council approved an amendment during its meeting Wednesday night to the Grand and Marin sub-district, in the Tidewater Basin Redevelopment Plan.

The sub-district covers Tan's property at the corner of Grand Street and Marin Boulevard and the neighboring ball fields owned by St. Peter's Prep.

The amendment allows for four-story buildings, with the option for a fifth-floor penthouse on corner lots like Tan's. That's a total height of 57 feet, a dramatic increase from the 15-foot restriction the zone previously called for."

a JJ comment: Quote:
Interesting years ago the city would not let Mr. Tan who owns The Golden Cicada on Grand Street build citing he was on the edge of a historic district. EX Mayor Healy then tries to take his property away via eminent domain so Prep could expand their practice field.

How is the city letting Prep build that 3 story monstrosity on Van Vorst even closer into the historic district?

Athletics are part of a well rounded offering. It was mostly paid for with a land sale and a donation from one of my '86 classmates. Prep athletes are also strictly under the same academic requirements as the rest of the students, and do not get a different curriculum or any special treatment.

But some people are just permanently sour I guess.
