Ahaa! I understand now - that is tricky for the math challenged like me! Thank you for helping me with this. Still looking for the full accounting off all precincts!

I voted on the question this year because I remembered it from all the discussions.

One year I didn't vote on the question because I missed it. It was in red color which did not stand out for me. I guess my eyes were looking for black.

1) It's a non-binding resolution. The vote is really just cover for the Council to act.

2) I find it mildly amusing that a referendum designed to increase voter turnout ought to wait for... better turnout elections ;)

Why are the JC election results still not reporting at 100% - it looks like the tally only counts 173 out of 181 stations - source?

And it kind of makes me wonder why someone who is so motivated to go out and vote for JCBOE candidates (24k+) won't vote on a public question (only 9,655/24,225 did). Is that a common occurrence?

Jersey City Public Question
173/181 95.58%

Vote Count Percent
Yes 5,057 52.38%
No 4,598 47.62%
Total 9,655 100.00%

Board of Education - Jersey City
173/181 95.58%

Vote Count Percent
NP - John Reichart 6,222 25.68%
NP - Gina Verdibello 5,174 21.36%
NP - Vidya Gangadin 6,165 25.45%
NP - Marilyn Roman 6,582 27.17%
Personal Choice 82 0.34%

Sorry Parkhurst, the mayor should not have lied in his emails, since this is a close elections, the council should not move the elections. Fulop has access to our emails as mayor, I and others expect him to use them wisely and not tell fibs.

The opponents of moving the election need to acknowledge that this vote was held under just about the best possible condition for them. With an Assembly race as a top ticket race you were going to have an electorate that most resembled a "off month" election. So while it is a very small turnout and a very small margin, if you had larger turnout I don't think the result would be different. It would probably be more definitive

I agree that this should have been held next year (we all know why it wasn't...Fulop wants his fallback plan in place before 2016). And while I am not necessarily in favor of the switch, I welcome greater participation on this question. So I'm with you on this one.

True. But I'd also say that the low turnout in this election is an argument in favor of consolidating elections.

E.g. the 2014 November general election had around 30% turnout. The 2012 November general election was closer to 60%. This election was (overall) closer to 15%.

In tight voting over timing of Jersey City elections, Fulop claims victory

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
November 03, 2015 at 10:13 PM

JERSEY CITY — Mayor Steve Fulop's political advisers are breathing easier now that it appears voters have narrowly approved a measure he backed that will pave the way for the city's non-partisan elections to move from May to November.

Roughly 52 percent voted in favor of the non-binding referendum and 49 percent voted against, according to preliminary results. With 96 percent of precincts reporting, 4,702 voted "yes" and 4,437 voted "no."

Turnout for the referendum was 8 percent.

Yesterday, Fulop sent an email saying the city will save $400,000 annually by switching to November. A number of citizens complained saying that is incorrect because the election is every 4 years. Fulop said he would send an corrected email. Around 10:00 PM that same day, Fulop sent a similar email without annual attached. Election day, Fulop sends the same email with the word annual in it. This is pure dishonest.

Let's say Fulop loses the governor race and decides to use his backup plan of running for reelection as mayor. How does he compare to other serious candidates?

Unless they did multiplication drills at the budget hearings, nothing they would have covered there is relevant to your claim that local tax revenues are $25 billion per year. You started off taking about rate, then you switched to base. You're all over the place, Yvonne. I agree that $400,000 isn't a big number compared to $550 million - but you have to take the gains where you can get them. I already said that I agree that Fulop is being self-serving in promoting this - 100%, as he would say. But that doesn't negate the fact that the savings are real and should be realized.

For the record, I've been to many budget hearings - just not in the past two years. Oddly, I don't recall seeing you at them - John Sebrowski was at a lot of them. Whether you are at them or not, going there to state the same faulty numbers over and over doesn't make them any less wrong.

Maybe you've remembered it wrong, but that math doesn't work. Simple multiplication shows that.

T-Bird, my information comes from many business administrators. All of them over the 27 years since reval happened. I don't make up numbers. I am sure if the reval goes through again that figure will change.

Uh, no. Not even close. I don't know what the average tax bill is, but I'll use $5,000 per year because I'm sure that's conservative and it makes for easy math. If "$5,000,000 = $1 on the tax rate", then total tax revenues must = $5,000,000 x $5,000 (using that number as the average tax bill) = $25 billion. The combined city, county and school tax pot is NOT $25 billion. It's not even $2 billion.

I try to vote in every election, no matter what month. I do my best to stay informed in order to have a real choice for each line. That being said, every time I vote in May, I have thought this is really stupid. Instead of complaining about low voter turnout in these off month elections, let's combine them all.

If in fact this move benefits one particular elected official in a possible bid for higher office, it's worth it anyway. I am not persuaded that the electorate cannot differentiate between federal, state and local candidates. And if they are confused, then having two or more separate election days isn't going to help them.

Most people who are employed during the day usually don't show up to vote in May and as far run offs. Get rid of it! If we want to be the best mid size city lets start acting like one.

Or it can be said that with Fulop winning on the first ballot, the runoff depressed turnout and the vote didn't reflect a majority but a tiny number of voters that were mobilized.

If your best example of the runoff as democracy is "Boggiano Won" then most of Jersey City would consider that a lousy reason for a runoff.

http://www.hudsoncountyclerk.org/elections/

Click on ?2015 General Election Sample Ballots" in the left hand column.

Then click on FORM 14 or 15 to see the actual sample ballot for Jersey City that was mailed.

(I have never missed getting a ballot mailed to me)

Calling the county clerk's office is also a pretty simple process.

Maybe you ought to do that, before launching into some conspiracy theory that justifies a federal investigation.

Probably just a line in a database.

Then again, your claims that this is a grave injustice, that somehow isn't worth a phone call to fix, is quite amusing. Maybe you should keep it up. :D

P.S. I've always gotten my sample ballots, including when I moved from Hoboken to JC.

Rest assured though, one thing I am not going to do is to complain to the County, as someone here suggested, let alone repeatedly - "How many time have I complained...". That would be a total waste of my time. Obviously, they're incompetent ? evidenced by the fact that they can't even organize to send mail to someone on their list of registered voters.

So those are my thoughts about this mess, but by all means feel free to draw your own conclusions.

Don't you think you should at least try before going all nuclear? All you have to do is call. Yeah, you'll probably be put on hold for a while, but then your bitching would be more justified.

I've got to go with Bamboozle on this. I do not know why, but the majority of the 20 years I have been voting in this city I have not received a sample ballot. A few times it has shown up, though it is sporadic. My wife always seems to get one, though I have not had such luck. No sample ballot for me this time around.

And oh my god Yvonne you bitch and moan about every single penny that Fulop spends and yet when some cost savings do come up you brush it away with "yeah well it's not enough" or when an AirBnB tax comes up to raise money off of tourists it's "hurr durr but hurting homeowners somehow blah blah."

Just admit that you are clinically insane and have absolutely no convictions on anything except that everything is wrong in this city and it always will be and I hate it all harumph harumph

Yes, seriously, NEVER. And I haven't received one for this election either.

Actually, it's very serious - speaks to the inability of City and County Government (or is it unwillingness...?) to oversee a fair and unbiased electoral process. One day, in my wildest dreams the Feds will investigate and the whole mess will be exposed for what it is.

Do you have the proper address on file? Do you live in an apartment building in which others might be getting your mail?

Annoyingly, I still have election ballots coming for people that haven't lived in my house for years.

My voter registration card has all the correct details for me, including my mailing address. I've NEVER received a sample ballot. The idea that somehow every election my sample ballot is delivered to someone else isn't believable - I receive ALL my other mail, and I've lived in the same small, 4-family building the entire time.

It reminds of when I first registered to vote in Jersey City, shortly after moving here. I applied about 6 weeks before the election, yet my voter registration card didn't arrive until about 3 weeks AFTER the election....

I wish I could believe it was plain, simple incompetence. Unfortunately, I can't. I really do hope the Feds take a long, hard look one day....
hahahahaha

I mean, dude you might not be getting a ballot, but do you really, honestly think that for some reason YOU and YOU ALONE have been singled out? Someone at the Post Office or Board of Elections decided that YOU are a problem and shouldn't be voting? Get over yourself. Probably some dumb administrative problem or the postboxes aren't labeled clearly.
