Panel on Newport high-rise cracks above Jersey City light rail station

A panel on the façade of the Newport Tower high-rise — directly above a Jersey City light rail station — cracked yesterday and authorities cordoned off the area as a precaution, a witness said.

The damaged panel was roughly 60 to 70 feet above the Newport station of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system, said Joe Shine, a freelance photographer for The Jersey Journal.

The Jersey City Fire Department responded to an "unsafe condition" at the tower at 2:21 p.m. yesterday, Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

The light rail was temporarily shut down so firefighters could remove the hanging piece of the panel from the building, Morrill said.
