A relatively small number of inmates sentenced to mandatory sentences in federal court in New Jersey will benefit under a program that will free thousands of inmates next month, according to data from the U.S. Sentencing Commission. The commission recommended easing mandatory sentences for certain drug offenders last year. As of August, 150 inmates petitioned federal court in New Jersey to have their terms reduced. Of those, 107 had their applications granted, according to the commission. An undetermined number of those 107 inmates will be among the roughly 6,000 inmates to be free on Nov. 1, the first day the amended sentencing guidelines take effect. It will be the largest ever one-time release of federal prisoners as the government seeks to ease overcrowding in jails and correctional institutions.
