Jersey City sprucing up Downtown pedestrian mallBy JERSEY CITY — City workers were out today adding a splash of color to the Newark Avenue pedestrian plaza by painting art on the side of planters on either end of the street. The work is part of the city's effort to make the plaza feel less like a closed-off street and more like a pedestrian mall. A few weeks ago, the city painted that part of the roadway green. It happened to me. I was getting a lung transplant and my ambulance couldn't get through the barrier. By the time the EMT carried me to the room above the Two Boots it was too late. My new lung was already taken by a pedestrian. Mr Fulop: Tear down this pedestrian plaza!

If you read the ordinance, certain people are allowed to drive their cars in the mall. In order to drive your car you must remove the barriers. I did not write the ordinance. I am telling you what it says.

I thought when Boggiano ran he might be a breath of fresh air, instead he's a joke.
"I think this whole thing was handled wrong," Boggiano said. "You don't close a main artery of the city." No, Rich, Newark between Jersey & Grove is not an artery. Most drivers avoided it if they could. No reason to go westbound unless you're actually looking to to park on the block, otherwise you make the right off Grove on Bay or sooner. The eastbound right onto Grove into an immediate light at Columbus makes it super clunky, the only times I've done it at all is to pick up a visitor at the PATH who isn't inclined to walk. Telling them to spot the McDonalds and wait in front is easier than explaining another landmark. If I'm heading from HP to Exchange Pl or City Hall I go down to Columbus to begin with. Yvonne: Somehow all over the city, country and world, there are doctors offices more than a few steps from the street. Sometimes they're quite a hike once you're in the hospital or office building. This handicapped argument is insane.

If Jersey City made a giant parking hive somewhere along 139 or something that was free to residents, I would happily park there instead of doing the stupid street parking dance.
Close all the streets!

From what I can tell, there's one dentist, one ophthalmologist, and one internal medicine office -- all very close to the intersection of Newark and Grove. The sidewalks are intact. No one needs to move any barriers. It's not a disastrous imposition on these individuals. All the horrors and dooms you've predicted for the pedestrian plaza? None of them are materializing. DTJC isn't snarled in horrendous traffic. No one's health is threatened because they can't drive to a spot 10 feet away from their doctor (to a spot already jammed by parked cars...). Every day, kids and adults enjoy the plaza. It's a done deal. It's going to benefit JC. If we're lucky, it will expand, and the city will add more pedestrian plazas elsewhere. I recommend you get used to it.

The same way they get to doctors offices in other areas in which there is no parking, like on Pavonia, by the bus terminal. People routinely would park on the eastbound side to pick up food or drop people off, creating a traffic hazard. Good riddance to that.

There are people who go to a lung specialties there. I am fortunate I do not have that problem but I cannot image people moving those heavy barriers and replacing them, it would be impossible. Many people with lung disease carry oxygen with them and/or use a walker.

If you are handicapped you have permission to drive down the middle of the street, but how do you move those large barriers if you have a legitimate handicapped? You must move them and replace them to their position.

Veritable filibuster fails to fell Downtown Jersey City pedestrian mallBy JERSEY CITY — A Downtown woman tried her hardest today to get the City Council to halt approval of the Newark Avenue pedestrian plaza. Jeanne Daly, 49, of Sussex Street, spent more than half an hour at the microphone addressing the nine-member body at its morning meeting. Daly called the pedestrian plaza — a one-block stretch from Erie to Grove streets that is now permanently closed to traffic — a "travesty," "tragic" and likely illegal. She was speaking during the public hearing on a measure implementing the pedestrian plaza, and so she had no time limit. She read from state statutes, slammed city officials for modeling the plaza after similar New York City pedestrian malls and criticized council members for allowing the city to open the plaza one month before the council voted to approve the plan. "I know I'm boring you, I'm sorry," she told the council after she had spoken for about 10 minutes. "I can see it in your faces." Daly said the plaza puts handicapped and elderly people who want to visit stores on that stretch at a disadvantage, and she thinks it favors the area's restaurants over other businesses, like a doctor's office. What Fulop and Friends have ignored (and are aware of) is that the pedestrian plaza violates the Americans With Disabilities Act Title I and Title II. The plaza was also established well before the vote which is scheduled to take place on July 15, 2015. Disabled persons- feel free to file a complaint with the American Civil Liberties Union. You will win BIG!

So? for those of you who noticed the green paint being applied this am, I overheard a group of workers saying that the whole street "is for walking only, no cars. The meters are coming out, feel free to take one if you want."
