Its primarily there (for the airlines that are not state run and have to make money) as a 'reward' for those who spend a shitload of money previously on the coach seats. I think its the business class seats where they make the money, not coach. Or rather business class plus the fully refundable full price coach tickets (which nobody who is paying themselves buys - effectively also 'business class' tickets). The discounted coach tickets you and I buy on websites I don't think they make much on. Robin.

The two things about the conservative narrative that always amaze me is how utterly stupid and ignorant it is and how adamant conservatives are about it despite overwhelming contradictory evidence.

Never fails that someone has to point out some past evil to deride their own country... do you hate your country?? Yes, slavery, and white male-centered policies were norm back then. You can't undo the past, and some things from our past we have now learned or evolved to dislike and/or repudiate, but it helps to understand that, and the circumstances under which it took place. Slavery was not created by us, and being born a male was an automatic advantage. And? What's your point?? It was the same in every other country of the time. We have a country that was born from a gaggle of misfits who somehow built entire cities and states out of raw, harsh nature, rebelled against the empire that ruled most of the world, expanded to cover the width of an entire continent, while it also managed to formulate a government that, to this day, continues a rich tradition of peaceful transitions of power from president to president, and which over the past 100 years went from being of little to no significance in the world's stage to become the world's premier superpower. Essentially, we lead the world in every way that matters (arts, science, medicine, engineering, military, governance, etc.) and continue to inspire countless others (but not you, apparently.) None of that happened because of pansies, or sheer luck. Being born American is a blessing, steeped in great, rich history, and with rights and privileges envied by most of the world. You should OWN that shit.

I am so sick of this retort. "Oh, the founding principles of this country couldn't be important because SLAVERY and SEXISM" (just like the rest of the world in the 18th century - and in addition most of those places had monarchy and the related entrenched classes and a state religion) Regardless of the flaws of 18th century norms, the founding principles of this country have directly led to the U.S.'s wealth and prosperity, which is exactly what makes this a decent country to live in. The "omg, but *I* deserve more crowd, what about me me me" (that tends to invoke this) has not done anything to make this country to live in and has directly contributed to its decline.

MDM, I'm not sure how you can compare flights in Europe, which are routinely under two hours, with cross-country flights here...

Prior to United's take-over, Continental was an example of good business, fair employee practice and a money making venture. Once United came in, it became all about the shareholders. The flight attendants are treated like crap, the customers are constantly getting services trimmed and up-charged for it.

My last flight on United was so awful I have vowed never to take them again if I can avoid it. I'd be thrilled if they pulled out of the region entirely so I'd never get stuck flying on them. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Also, speaking of luxury, their first class tickets are always absurdly expensive. Compare to Delta or American which tend to be roughly twice what coach costs (say, $300 vs $580), United seems to routinely pull a 4x+ price disparity ($250 vs $1k+).

The standing seat was from Ryanair.. which is probably one of the most hated airlines in Europe, yet gets lots of business (and makes money) because the tickets are cheap.

Soooo TRUE. And, not just here in JCLIST. Every single thing seems to invite a "us vs them" or a "the 'man' is keeping me down" or a 'woe is me' retort. Honestly, it is pretty sad that a country built on the ideals of individualism, hard work and self sufficiency seems to have forgotten those principles.

Are you serious? The airlines are definitely doing what people demand: providing the bare minimum service at the lowest possible price, sometimes at a loss. People simply don't want to pay much money at all. Flying today is comparatively cheaper than it was 10, 20, or 40 years ago. If people were willing to pay fares twice as high, the airlines wouldn't nickel and dime us, nor would they charge "a la carte" for everything else. About 5 years ago, some airlines opened conversations with the FAA and plane manufacturers about the possibility of modifying regulations and plane interior configurations to allow for standing passengers during take off and landing, as they learned via surveys and studies that many customers would be willing to fly STANDING UP if it meant they could pay less.

I doubt United is expanding their luxury offerings because they intend to lose money. They are not a state subsidized airline. They're making money on it.

Last month I flew my wife to visit her family business class going out and first class coming back (a whole lot of frequent flyer miles got cashed in). There are only 6 seats on a 777-300ER in first class available. At Cathay Pacific they have 3 flight attendants for just the 6 people. The food is awesome.... and they serve caviar.
Hint: Airlines actually lose money on first class.. It's a loss leader as many of those seats go to frequent flyer mile travelers. Its primarily there (for the airlines that are not state run and have to make money) as a 'reward' for those who spend a shitload of money previously on the coach seats. http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/n ... ly-committed-9115785.html Quote:

No, that's not what they are doing. What they are doing is building a service to cater to the elite while dragging along steerage class. This change in service is directly related to the growing wealth disparity and shrinking middle class.

They are just giving what the public demands: cheaper seats vs. comfort. If you want comfort.. go with one of the state run airlines that use their airline to show off (i.e. Emirates Air) and where making money is a secondary concern. Emirates is a member of the Star Alliance (so is United). You can use your frequent flyer miles to upgrade to 1st Class on Emirates:

Flatbed seating? How about 2 more inches of leg room for the peasants. United Airlines = chiropractor.

United Airlines says it's pulling out of John F. Kennedy International Airport and that its flights from there to Los Angeles and San Francisco will depart from Newark, which for the first time will now offer amenities like flatbed seating and on-demand movies on cross-country flights. United already offers service from Newark Liberty International Airport to both LAX and SFO, but without the kind of amenities typically only available on international flights. In Tuesday's announcement of the shift, effective in October, United said it was intended to strengthen its northeast hub at Newark Liberty, where the Chicago-based carrier already accounts for 70 percent of all flights. Officials also said the move comes after seven unprofitable years of operating out of JFK.
