Steven Rodas | For The Jersey Journal

Prato, a small city in Tuscany just north of the capital of Italy, is home to delicious baked specialties such as the cantucci.

This traditional cookie is one of the many treats you could smell baking right here in Jersey City at the newly opened Prato Bakery.

"The residents come almost every day and sometimes two times a day, for a cappuccino, a focaccia sandwich and for my cantucci," said owner and baker Simone Bertini. "The typical cookies from the tradition of Prato, my hometown, (are made) with almond, chocolate, apricot, prune and figs, that are soft and don't have butter or oil."

Prato Bakery, located at 61 Erie St., is Bertini and wife Teresa Villi's second bakery in the U.S after they opened Il Cantuccio in the West Village of New York City in 2008.

Funny. The same scene played out during my last visit. Interestingly, the two people engaged in the "animated" conversation didn't seem to be at all related to the business. Just two Italian customers.

Harsimus Cove now has a growing italophone and francophone population. It's not unusual to hear both lanuages spoken in Key Food. Kinda cool, I think.

Agreed, as well! This place is 100% legit. After at least three visits, I have nothing but praise for Prato. Their cantucci is PERFECT (my favorite being the apricot ones, followed closely by the chocolate ones) and their other pastries are also delicious (the focaccina with Nutella is so good, and their handmade donuts are great, as well). I haven't tried their sandwiches, but they look like what you would get in Italy. Staff is always attentive and pleasant. This is a superb addition to DTJC.

Erie St. is really getting spoiled with good coffee options.

Completely agree. Stopped in last Saturday for the prosciutto focaccia sandwich. Delicious, and reasonably priced - a drink and a sandwich for under $10. Place seems to be doing a roaring trade every morning when I pass on the way to work and when I pass on the weekend. Great addition to the neighborhood.

The space is gorgeous....plenty of seating and a beautiful build out. Focaccia was heavenly...a little oily, a bit salty...just spot on. Capuchino machine was giving the owner some issues this week...they'll figure it out soon enough.

Moozerella sandwich had a single, paper thin slice of cheese and some tomatoes. Delicious.
However.....I'm a girl.
A very thin girl.
I've been to Italy.
I *get* that this is an authentic translation and appreciate it. But please add another slice or *two* of cheese.

Will be back soon.

Stopped by there this afternoon, nice place roomy. I had an espresso and chatted with the owner. They are from the region of Tuscany and the town that bears the name of their bakery. The focaccia sandwiches look tasty will probably return soon.

The sandwiches are delicious and huge. I had the coffee black, and it was my favorite in the neighborhood.

I went there too. This almond delicacy is great, I bought a pound of it. A little too great for my waistline if I don't hit the trails actually!

I brought a 1.5 pounds of contucci to my 10am Italian class and everyone loved them. They must be eaten on the day they are bought, or at least the ones made with almond paste do. The space is very handsome. Unlike Carrino, the meats are Italian not American, but I forgot to ask if they are sold by weight.

Assuming the portions are good, the prices look great. Looking forward to a new place that looks to strike the balance between quality and price
