A Jersey City woman who was a teacher in Newark was sentenced to five years in prison this morning for having sex at her Bergen Avenue home with a 14-year-old male student on numerous occasions.

"Your honor she obliterated the line, she did not just cross it," Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Lynne Seborowski said of 29-year-old Elyse Cromwell at the sentencing hearing before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Joseph Isabella.

"She met the victim when he was 12-years-old and for the next two years she groomed him, she gained his trust, and at the age of 14, she started sending him texts saying she wanted to have sex with him, said Seborowski, adding that Cromwell plied the boy with marijuana and told him she heard he was well endowed.

On Jan. 31, 2014, Cromwell was arrested on charges she had sex with the boy on multiple occasions while serving as his "homeroom and English teacher," according to the criminal complaint. That complaint says she "performed prohibited sexual acts upon" the boy, who was 15-years-old at the time of her arrest.

Before being sentenced, Cromwell told the court, "I'm really sorry for any pain or harm I caused... I never meant to hurt anyone and I will try to take this sentencing and make it positive."

Drug charges have now been filed against the Newark school teacher charged earlier this month with having sex with a 14-year-old student in her Jersey City home, officials said.

Elyse Cromwell, 27, of Bergen Avenue, made her first court appearance today on charges she possessed more than one ounce of marijuana but less than five pounds with intent to distribute it to the 14-year-old, according to the criminal complaint made available today.

She is also charged with endangering the welfare of the now 15-year-old boy, the new complaint says.

Cromwell was wearing jail clothes when she appeared in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny on Jan. 31 regarding the prior charges. At that time, her bail was set at $300,000 cash or bond. Information on whether it was later reduced was not available today.

Cromwell was out on bail and was wearing street clothes when she appeared in CJP court today on the new charges. She has been ordered to have no contact with the victim as a condition of bail.

The complaint says Cromwell is employed by the Newark Board of Education as a high school teacher.

Cromwell, who was arrested yesterday, appeared this afternoon in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny. She wore the green garb of the jail and her brown hair was in a long braid draped over her right shoulder.

Hudson County Superior Court Judge Francis Schultz had already set Cromwell?s bail at $300,000 cash or bond, but CJP Judge Margaret Marley ordered today that as a condition of bail, Cromwell must have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.

The complaint says Cromwell is employed by the Newark Board of Education as a high school teacher. Newark school officials did not immediately return a call seeking further information. News12 is reporting that Cromwell is a teacher at the Early College High School and that she has been suspended.
