The only way to meet that timeline would be to repurpose the existing Xanadu. Is that the plan?

I doubt this will happen now that Hard Rock Meadowlands will probably be here as early as next year.

Springfield is a little smaller than JC - 150,000 residents - and it has some parallels as a former manufacturing center with a more prosperous past; unlike JC it's not a major job engine nor near one (e.g., NYC) but it will be interesting to see how the casino plays out. Some people, like my Aunt who lives there is very optimistic.

To Yvonne and user1111's point about crime - Springfield is considered to be a high crime area, so you'll see there if the casino makes things worse, or fulfills its promise of more jobs and less poverty.

Perhaps Springfield should have looked at Atlantic City. I wonder if tourism in this part of the country will do for gambling what it did to Time Square - sanitize it. I wonder how many of NYC's 50,000,000 annual tourists would hop a ferry for an afternoon of blackjack while the kids visit the science museum or some similar family-oriented scenario.

Also, detractors of the casino conveniently do not mention that these days 50% of casino's profits are from entertainment, events, concerts and restaurants. These are not your father's casinos. I hate gambling, but I am enthusiastically for the casino in JC for those reasons, and concomitant job creation.

On casinos in northern Jersey, move with care | Editorial

By Star-Ledger Editorial Board The Star-Ledger
on June 01, 2015 at  7:45 AM

Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday offered an explicit endorsement of casino gambling in northern New Jersey, ending any shred of doubt as to his position. Voters could decide the issue as early as this November.

This a risky move, given the economic catastrophe that rocked Atlantic City last year when four casinos closed their doors, throwing 8,000 people out of work.

Mayor Don Guardian, a rookie Republican who has brought clean and effective government to Atlantic City for the first time in decades, believes a gambling expansion would sink a fresh dagger into the heart of his struggling city just as it is getting up off its knees.

"We are not dead," he says. "But we are wounded."

Casino gambling in northern New Jersey is inevitable. Because when New Jersey gamblers travel to casinos in New York or Pennsylvania, this state effectively exports jobs. Credible investors have proposed building casinos in the Meadowlands and in Jersey City.

How many more casinos can the region support? We have them in PA, NY, and the ones in AC are going broke.

Would the one in Jersey City have a special feature? Ferry service? Legal prostitution? or what?

How could anyone possibly be stunned by this? I certainly don't want a casino here but a lot of power players stand to gain a TON of $$$ from this project.

These power players can use their money and influence to tremendously help (or harm) a politician running for office.

I'm sure Fulop is tripping over himself to get these guys' support for his governor campaign. In fact, I'd be "absolutely stunned" if Fulop even offered token resistance. I'm quite sure he will do whatever it takes to help this process.

Jersey City residents are ready to hit the jackpot.

With a bill that would allow voters to approve giving the Legislature authority to establish casinos in Hudson, Bergen, and Essex counties, residents are hoping they will be able to roll the dice and play the slots close to home.

Overwhelmingly, people polled today in different parts of the city said bringing casinos to Hudson County and North Jersey is a sure winner.

"I think it would be great," said Latisha Palmer, 29, of Jersey City. "It's something different to do in the area."

The current state constitution only allows for casino gambling in Atlantic City. For many people in Hudson County, traveling more than 120 miles to gamble is too much of a hassle.

"No one wants to go to New York or Pennsylvania (where there are casinos)," a woman, who chose not to give her name, said.

Many residents admit they enjoy trying their luck at the felt tables, but because Atlantic City is so far they don't spend much time there.

For some, the possibility of having a casino in Hudson County comes too late.

Robert Perry, 57, of Jersey City, said he is moving to North Carolina later this week after living in Jersey City for more than 40 years.

Prieto will want to dip his beak in it as well I'm sure, since he'll demand a Meadowlands casino to be included.

No disagreement here, but don't be surprised when Christie decides to start making a push with it. For now, he's likely waiting on more money to come in before he openly advocates for it. Maybe those casino developers will have some luxury box seats in Jerry World to give him...

And the casino project will certainly help former Democratic Governor Jim 'flim flam' Florio, whose company is driving the adjacent to LSP 'Canal Crossing' development south of Berry Lane park.

No, Christie is focusing on Christie. He does not give a crap about New Jersey but to be fair not many give a fu&k about New Jersey that's why its nicknamed the armpit.

I did not ask you if he traveled too much out of NJ but if he was focusing enough on NJ. The 2 issues might be linked as I don't think he is working for NJ when he travels (50% of the time in 2015) but the main issue is: is he focusing on what is best for NJ when making decisions or what is best for his presidential aspiration?

And in that case, the comparison to Obama is really not judicious. Comparing his situation to Fulop's seems more appropriate.

If you know anything at all about Christie you know he's not going to mold his opinion to whatever a poll suggests he should. In fact, many of his actions have hurt him with more conservative Republicans. No jailing certain drug offenders, the Brobama hug, and his moderate social views all come to mind.

If it's such a great idea, why doesn't Manhattan and NY State have casinos?

You have not answered mine. Do you think Christie is focusing enough on NJ? Seems like a pretty easy question to answer. No?
