JERSEY CITY -- A man found bloodied and unconscious on a Jersey City street early yesterday remains in critical condition at Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health and social workers at the hospital are helping the man's family obtain emergency visas from India to be at his side, hospital officials said this evening.

The 28-year-old man was found unconscious at about 3:45 a.m. yesterday at the corner Tonnelle and Van Reipen avenues. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with serious head trauma, police said.

The man is from India, but lives in Jersey City and studies at a school in New York, police said.

Police over radio transmissions stated that the scene did not appear to be a robbery since the man's wallet and money was still in his pocket, and his bike was still nearby. Police also said that it did not appear the bike was struck by a vehicle.

I see the location has changed since yesterday. Ahh the infamous similar JC street name situation. At first it was reported happening at Van Reyen Street and Tonelle Avenue which is up behind the VIP restaurant. Van Reipen Avenue and Tonnelle Avenue is where the above photos are from and is now being reported where the incident took place. Van Reipen Avenue is also continued over by the Stanley Theater because of the railroad cut. Confusing yes.

Anyway that area of Journal Square is very quiet and safe. I don?t think it was a robbery or attack. There is a very dangerous long cross walk at the tip of Garrison at Tonnele Avenue. The painted cross walk starts at 159 Garrison at the Evergreen Funeral Home. It then crosses over to the little Triangle Park. As you are walking you actually have your back to the speeding traffic coming up Tonelle Avenue.

Google map ?159 Garrison Avenue Jersey City? and you will see what I mean via the satellite image. Don?t know if the poor guy was found near that cross walk but if so then that was the culprit. It was either a hit and run or the guy jumped off of the bike to avoid being hit.

PS - if anyone from the city is reading this you should paint over that long cross walk. Way to easy to get blindsided by a speeding car as you are crossing. Let people walk up a little further and use the crosswalk on Pavonia to cross Garrison.
