NJ lawmakers predict bigger effort behind school vouchers

JERSEY CITY ? State lawmakers on Friday said they expected a greater push this year for a school-voucher program that would give families money to attend private and religious schools, despite years of inaction on such a measure.

Lawmakers attending the third annual New Jersey Choice Summit said it was a priority for Gov. Christie, who called for the passage of the voucher bill in his Jan. 13 State of the State address. School vouchers, charter schools and urban education all were discussed at the summit Friday at St. Peter?s University.

The legislators acknowledged that there weren?t enough votes now to pass the Opportunity Scholarship Act, as the voucher bill is known, but state Sen. Thomas Kean Jr., who has sponsored the bill the past 11 years, said he expected more effort on the issue this time. Kean is a Monmouth County Republican.
